troutfiend1985 Posted September 1, 2010 Posted September 1, 2010 I'm not sure how to explain that it is stupid to try to cross a river if you allegedly can't swim...it just is.I have a daughter and if she tried to cross a river and couldn't swim I would feel she is stupid as well. I just feel there are way to many stupid people in today's society, the gene pool is getting to run down. I rarely tell people that their opinions are invalid, as I usually try to see both sides, but sir, your opinions are invalid and you should keep comments like this to yourself. If that was your child who died in the river you would be highly offended having someone stating that your child was stupid. Yes, kids do stupid things, but I am sure we have all done things in our life that was less than intelligent. Criticism from a grown man should show at least some compassion for the families that are grieving, and the fact that someone lost a child, or in the alternative a father. The gene pool thinning and Social Darwinism are inapplicable to these situations; I do not even see how you could post something so insensitive. Actually, I am embarrassed that you post on this forum with this type of worldview. Now that I am through venting, my thoughts go to those families who lost a loved one on the river. “The greatest menace to freedom is an inert people” J. Brandeis

I just feel there are way to many stupid people in today's society, the gene pool is getting to run down. These statements are made by me based on the allegation he crossed the river with out knowing how to swim. I feel the loss of life is tragic but it's going to keep happening if people who don't know how to swim keep attempting to cross the Meramec.I have a house on that river and am sick of stupid people killing themselves because they went on the river and did not know how to swim, you might as well go play on HWY 270 at 5:30 pm. I'm going to agree with Smalliebiggs on this one...just doesn't make since. There is no limit to what a man can do or how far he can go if he doesn't mind who gets the credit
ness Posted September 1, 2010 Posted September 1, 2010 Look guys, A couple folks are dead. How about some sympathy? The comments about alcohol, the "I heard" he can't swim, and other speculation can very easily be repeated, and get a life of their own. How about if you don't know something, you don't say anything. Can I get an AMEN on that one? There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.

How about if you don't know something, you don't say anything. I "heard" he couldn't swim on FOX news, so you be the judge. They do most of their lying on their cable network, but perhaps a little bit has trickled down to the local stations, too.
fishinwrench Posted September 1, 2010 Posted September 1, 2010 I "heard" he couldn't swim on FOX news, so you be the judge. They do most of their lying on their cable network, but perhaps a little bit has trickled down to the local stations, too. Knowing the way the media operates, someone may have reported that he got a cramp and couldn't swim the rest of the way....So the story just came out as "he couldn't swim". A guy reportedly got "ran over by his own PWC" here at the lake during the shootout last weekend and suffered moderate injurys. The local news reported the cause as a "mechanical failure". The real situation (told to me by someone that was there on the dock) that he did not have the kill switch lanyard attached to his wrist, he went to hop up on a dock, slipped and fell, and when he popped back up he smacked his head on his wave-runner which was still running and knocked himself unconscious. Now that's not what I would call being "run over because of a mechanical failure".

If you have such contempt and distrust for Fox, maybe you shouldn't quote them. And maybe don't try to steer us into THAT stuff. But, to the original point: your speculation is not based on any first-hand knowledge or fact, and potentially hurtful. Smallie's too. Al already mentioned he was an acquaintance of one of the victims. So, maybe they're not just nameless, faceless, careless, stupid drunks. And even if they were, I think it's poor form to trash them.
