He is now on the college Bass Fishing Team and has his first tourney on the 19th of Sept. on Lake Hudson in Oklahoma. We are needing some tips and pointers from some of you Bass Fishermen/women out there. He needs to be completely geared up with 2 rods, tackle etc.... What rod/reel combos would you guys recommend? Tackle boxes? Lures? Techniques for this lake during this time frame? This boy is so excited about this that we are going to support him in any way possible. There's such a huge price range on rods/reels that you have to figure out how much you can spend then you can find gear and get recommendations for that price range. How do the college teams get boats, do they have to supply their own?

Being his budget is coming out of my pocket....I'm gonna try and keep it right around $1000 for rods reels and tackle to start with. I do not know about the boats. Quillback Posted September 1, 2010 Posted September 1, 2010 There's so much stuff he could need that now that I think about it I don't know if I would even want to make any suggestions. You might want to get on some of the larger nationwide forums for some info, not that there aren't knowledgeable folks here but for example on bassresource.com there's a forum for tournaments and there's some threads that talk about college fishing tourneys like this one http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1259806335 There's many threads about rods//lures/techniques and which set ups are the best for the money, etc. on that forum also. Good place to do some research and maybe narrow things down so you can focus in on what he's going to need.

gotmuddy Posted September 1, 2010 Posted September 1, 2010 If it were me with a $1000 limit I would buy rods and reels used. www.texasfishingforum.com always has someone selling gear for a reasonable price. I would spend $300 or so on 3 rod/reel combos, possibly $400. Use $75 or so on tackle storage and the rest on quality tackle. Cranks, good plastics, jigs, etc. everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.
