denjac Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 I had 40 total today with 11 keepers, mostly swimming a white jig around boat docks. Oh wait, wrong lake. I was at Grand. And where was I? Oh I had to work. Sounds like its picking up. Dennis Boothe Joplin Mo. Members Lunker Lane Posted September 25, 2010 Members Posted September 25, 2010 What color of yellow magic? Is the red fin still going in Kimberling area? Hope to get out Monday.
Donna G Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 Different lake, but came across some finicky schoolers this weekend chasing little bitty shad. I ran a very small salt and pepper grub through them on a spinning rig. Connected with a few. When they used to do that in Texas at lakes like Toledo bend, we'd tie on a clear tiny torpedo with a white crappie jig behind the torpedo on a 3 or 4' leader. Saw a crappie fisherman Saturday land a really nice bass in front of a dock. I didn't see what he was using, but I assumed it was a jig. denjac Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 I had the kiddos bust up in front of me yesterday twice. They hit the fin although it took em 1-2-3-4 hits to get it right. Like Bill said there were 1000's of em. They would not hit anything else I tried. Spoon, blade, rattle trap. There fussy eaters! Dennis Boothe Joplin Mo. Members stoneattherock Posted September 28, 2010 Members Posted September 28, 2010 Launched at Viney this morning at 7:15. Topwater was on fire between Emerald Point and the Kings River. Fished with long time client and friends Garry and Kelly Miller, from Belton. Could see fish chasing from a 1/2 mile, really looked like whites, but they are bass. Kind of fickle, as they are chasing nickle size shad. Caught about 30, with 6 good keepers this morning using the dropshot, spook jr. and a yellow magic. Had a hundred refusals. Usually I can throw a rostertail or a small jerk bait when they are missing the topwater and have them eat it, but they were really fussy, on the calm water before the wind. Without a doubt the yellow magic chugger was the best. They would not even swirl on a fin. Any suggestions would be great. Maybe a small trap? The roostertail is usually the deal. Would not even look at the 1/2 oz spoon. I'm headed down to the shed right now to servey my tackle and see if I can figure it out. It is kind of funny however, I'm crying about 30 fish with 6 keepers mostly topwater. It is just when there are 50 swirls around you, I think a guy should be able to catch them all. I think I need to come back to reality. I really feel great about the day. T. I tried to get Garry to throw over my head, but like you, he was chicken.
Members stoneattherock Posted September 28, 2010 Members Posted September 28, 2010 Took my 5 year old fishing friday night til dark then sat in the fog til lunch...same situation with fishing coming up around us near Turkey mountain and then again in Owl Creek...we had lots of sucess just waiting for the swirls and throwing Lucky Craft ghost Sammys....three keepers and over 35 boated with him catching the majority while i kept us from blowing with the wind LOL...was great fun for a dad to see a very excited son and the surfacing fish were a blast.
Sore Thumbs Posted October 2, 2010 Posted October 2, 2010 Bill. I was in the Eagle Rock and Owl Creek area saw alot of the same balls of baitfish and I was tearing them up with a Zoom Super Fluke. I do it a little different than most. I get a Gamakatsu Super Line hook in 5/0 and rig it with the new Disco Violet color. The color is sort of clear with purple flakes in them. The reason I use these hooks is two fold. I can cast them a lot farther and they sink faster. You can throw them around the baitfish with an erratic retrieve and those bass will absolutly hammer it. I'm going this Sunday to the same area and I am going to try same technique with 1/16oz wieghted hooks. I'm hoping this will keep the Fluke from popping out of the water during retrieve. Last year about this same time around the Kimberling area on a long flat point I caught a SM that wieghed 5 lbs 1oz on an Excaliber Jimmy silver with black back. Caught SM,KY and LM that day. That was one of my best days ever fishing and it was the day I fell in love with Table Rock. I hope this helps you Bill. Lord knows you help us as much as you can and I'm sure I speak for everyone here when I say that we greatly appreciate everything you do for OAF.
