Members trout_bum Posted September 29, 2010 Author Members Posted September 29, 2010 There's a chance that when the guy said he was "looking for his screwdriver" that he was being honest. Maybe he was trying to pry your slider open and dropped his screwdriver between the cab and bed. It wouldn't hurt to take a look, it may still be pinched in there and it will have his prints on it.....you can play CSI. That's funny because he had the screwdriver he was trying to pry the window open with in his hand when he turned around. I forgot to mention that. brittsnbirds Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 Well that settles that. I guess I will start packing my Glock 45 again when I fish. Had to in Idaho for bears! Just remember "dead men tell no tales" and you only have to pay for them once!!
Gene K Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 Well that settles that. I guess I will start packing my Glock 45 again when I fish. I was always under the assumption that weapons must be cased an unloaded when in the ONSR (unless hunting). Primarily because of signs posted and this document, which was the only thing I could find on the ONSR NPS site last I looked (more than a year ago). However, a google of the subject returns numerous URL's that mention the firearms ban was lifted early this year (example). And now I see the ONSR site has posted this document, which verifies that information. IMHO, good for the law abiding citizens - bad news for the criminals; They could care less if they are permitted to carry a firearm or not. Too many times I have run across situations that were threatening to me. Portable meth labs that you happen upon at night, un-leashed aggressive pit bulls, large crowds of idiots screaming and doing their best to intimidate you, etc. I certainly hope I never would have to pull the weapon (last resort), but I sure would feel a whole lot more comfortable having it with me at certain times.
Trav Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 I have a car alarm out of my old car if you want to trade something for it. A light breeze will set it off....drove me nuts!!.... "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
Members trout_bum Posted September 29, 2010 Author Members Posted September 29, 2010 I've never thought about carrying a firearm with me while fishing, but after what happened I'm seriously considering taking some classes and getting a concealed handgun permit. You just never know what's going to happen out there. Corey Dodson "Trout everywhere tremble at the mention of my name."

Not anymore, Federal Lands are open to carry, concealed or openly. Has been that way for a few months now. Still places like campgrounds or gatherings of Federal Employees, Federal buildings and grounds are off limits. It is subject to States Rules. If you are CCW certified, you can carry concealed, otherwise, open carry is allowed. You can hunt on ONSR Lands with proper licenses. Someone breaking into a truck is hardly justification to end his sorry life, but, if it had been me, he would have been looking down the barrel of a loaded weapon or retreating very fast. RSBreth Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 When I've been in very remote places I've had a few run-ins with weird folks, but lately I've had more problems with very aggressive semi-feral dogs. Either reason is a good one for responsible CCW. Another option in the less-than-lethal scheme of things is something my wife has carried for years before the concealed carry was passed, this: A little big for carrying around during everyday activities, but in a fly vest it might come in handy. I know it works on big, stupid dogs, and bears. Not sure about meth fiends.
Sam Potter Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 Corey, My name is Sam. I have a fly fishing guide service (TightLine) for the upper Current River.. I would like to talk to you in detail about your experience at TanVat. I have an obvious concern for your experience. Email: Currentriver@embarqmail.com Thanks
Gavin Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 FWIW, there is a new cell tower in the area...We had both voice & data access in camp this weekend..Not sure if it works at Baptist or Tan Vat, but it worked really well down in the big bluff stretch below Ashley......Might be a better idea to carry your phone with you because I think that you would have a hard time justifying the use of lethal force for a minor property crime. More trouble than its worth, IMO. Cheers.

Works at Baptist for some phones. My iPhone works there, but some other phones on the same network were not getting a signal. You can't justify even pulling a weapon out in such a matter. But should you have one with you, you might be more comfortable in confronting the crook, just knowing that if THEY initiate force or threaten harm that you have something for protection. Last resort.
