tjulianc Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 I was wondering if anybody has any good suggestions for rod storage for the rear seat in a tandem canoe. My goal is to have my 3 to 4 poles somewhat secured, just in case I tip, yet accessible for when I need to grab a top water bait when I see that big bass chasing some shad up on a gravel bar and I've been fishing a jig or worm. They are also getting wet from laying on the bottom of the canoe, tucked up in the stern, which isn't good for my reels. I have web seating, and was thinking about a bracket that would fit under my seat that would hold my rods/reels up, then use a bungee, or velcro or something to strap it to the thwart in front of me. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks.
eric1978 Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 Attach some bungees to the top of your thwarts...or get fancy...
tjulianc Posted September 29, 2010 Author Posted September 29, 2010 Thats nice. How much would you charge for a pair of those?
eric1978 Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 Thats nice. How much would you charge for a pair of those? LOL...more than they'd be worth. Just take your Dremel and a piece of hardwood and start carvin' on it. There are much simpler ways to secure rods, though.
Gavin Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 Truth be know...I never worry about it...I just lay em on the thwarts and tuck the tips inboard if possible..depends on how much junk I'm hauling.
Al Agnew Posted October 1, 2010 Posted October 1, 2010 Yeah, I really love Eric's deal, but I just lay two so that the handles are on the sides of the seat and the rods are lying on the thwart in front of me, tips inside the gunwales, then two more with handles on the thwart and tips tucked in under the front seat. When I'm in the solo canoe I carry five, in the tandem I carry four. I've lost a couple of rods over the years, but if you're prudent and don't take chances in tricky riffles, and if you keep the rods inside the gunwales so that you don't kick or knock them overboard, losing one is an extreme rarity. And I want every rod instantly available.
gotmuddy Posted October 1, 2010 Posted October 1, 2010 I usually keep whatever rod I am not using directly behind me in the buffalo but the last trip I started putting them on top of the crossmembers of my canoe. I have a rod holder zip tied to the crossmember in front of my seat(rear) but only use them when we are in serious rapids. everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.
tjulianc Posted October 1, 2010 Author Posted October 1, 2010 I appreciate the tips. I, also, am pretty casual until I see a potential hazard ahead. I bought some velcro straps the other night and will give them a try the next time I float. Its all a balance between readiness and security. This winter, I might give Eric's idea a try in my dad's shop. I'll let you know how I do. Thanks.
ness Posted October 1, 2010 Posted October 1, 2010 I'm usually just rigged up with two fly rods. I drip the reel between the two slats on the canoe seat and tuck the tips up under the bow plate. That's enough to keep me from knocking them out, and they're pretty easy to get to. Seeing Eric's setup makes me think a couple little tarp bungees (a loop with a ball on the end) might be handy. Or, not -- if they're not secured somehow. John
eric1978 Posted October 1, 2010 Posted October 1, 2010 Yeah, the little carved rod holder is only for convenience...I keep the rod I'm using most on the holder for quick access, and keep the others laying on the seat thwart next to me. I plan to devise something like ness is talking about, just a bungee to hold the handles down, but honestly I don't worry about it much, either.
