Cane Bluff to Greer might be too low to float until the water level picks up. Be sure to check with Brian before you commit to that stretch.

Plenty of water from Riverton to The Narrows (SH142). And I know there are lots of nice smallmouth in that stretch.

However, I wouldn't rule out a float through the trout waters. Just be prepared to try a few different ideas until you get find where they are and what they want. Again, check with Brian.

And concerning tippet - The Eleven Point is so fast (and deep) that you can generally go -2 from what is needed elsewhere. So a clear, shallow day on 11P might tolerate a 5X (vs 7X on the upper Current or Taneycomo). And you'll benefit from heavier tippet (when you can get away with it) because it will break off less often. Three points: You want to fish deep (therefore will frequently snag the bottom and need to un-snag), you want to fish heavy (weighted flies benefit from proportional tippet to throw them), and you want to promptly land what you hook (landing larger trout in faster water requires a heavier tippet for safest catch & release).

Cane to Greer is a nice float...but it might be a drag-a-thon at this water level. We did pretty well with Flukes & Green Pumpkin Plastics on that stretch a couple months ago....I've never floated below Riverton, but I'd expect a bunch of frog water stretches. Have a great trip.

Did guide trips Sat and today and did real well both days. This is the lowest the river has been in 2 years though. I have noticed better hook up rates with 5x over 4x lately, but on a given day if they are on...it might not be a big deal. Today my trip started with a trout, then a 14 inch smallie, 9 inch goggle eye, 20 inch pickerel, hog sucker, trout, then sucker, then trout the rest of the day. What a crazy, but cool way to start the day.

I did Cane to Greer the weekend of October 3 and the weekend of October 10 and it IS a dragathon. The water is LOW and, for fear of exaggerating (and I am not), clearer than the water in a water bottle. Seriously. I filled up empty water bottles with Eleven Point water and they were identical in clarity. Clear water means the fish are spooky. Smallmouth, too. I caught fish both weekends, but in small numbers and small sizes. My best catches were in deep water where the line was less visible (I was chucking 6 lb. test in the green color versus my usual 8 lb. test in red). Crawfish replicas proved best. Soft plastics floated and drifted in current (crawfish shape), tubes fished DEEP on 1/4 oz. sinkers and spinners all worked, though, again, nothing worked WELL.

I am not much of a trout fisher, though I have caught a few in my day. Still, as spooky as smallies are, trout hookups were tougher. My usual standbys -- rooster tails, spoons and crawfish and minnow cranks -- were all pretty weak on trout. I landed a few, but the bites were tepid.

Still, fall colors right now are incredible. I was amazed by the color I saw Sunday, Oct. 10. Next weekend will be perfect. So even if the fishing stinks, there's still good reason to go.

I am going to be the optimist here!!!As low as the river is, it is still above the average for this time of the year.

It also looks like rain is on the way and will make it even better for the weekend!!! I ain't scared to fish for those trout!!!

Thanks to all for advice and tips. We'll see how the group does first couple of days as 2 friends are coming in Thurs for a half day and we'll all be in Friday for fishing the trout waters. Just thinking if fishing is too slow for our liking, I might be willing to float Riverton to Hwy 142 or the Narrows. I've heard there are some pretty stretches and heard the Narrows is awesome with the 3 springs close by. Regardless, I expect the woods to be spectacular. I always consider the catching fish to be a bonus to an already great adventure. And I'm always up for a new adventure, Snap!! :hi:
