Bought My First Kayak Yesterday!

I am so excited I cannot stand it. I cannot wait to use my new 'yak. I bought it at the bass pro return store in thayer, mo yesterday. I got it for $250($480 retail). I intend to take it out this weekend for a trial run.

Now let the choices begin. I have Yaks and Canoes and even a yak that thinks its a canoe (Native Watercraft 14.5)

Each have good points and each have bad points.

When the water is UP,COLD and Fast I love me Canoe. It is a high, dry ride. I can stand in it and site fish. Carry camping gear for 12.

My Native 14.5 is the best all around boat I have ever had. It holds enough gear for camping, I can stand in it super stable. However it is not a good boat for ledges or spring/fall hay stacks without skirts.

My SOT perception caster 12 is and awesome summer boat but it is a very wet ride. I would recommend a good pair of breathable waders in the spring and fall.

My newest boat is a Native Watercraft Versa Board. Have not had a chance to use it yet and it will be a summer boat. Super stable to stand on and fish. Not sure how it will do on the rivers but the youtube vids of guys standing doing class 3 rapids gives me hope.

Congrats.....I have often thought of getting one myself. Question...after you put in and go down stream, how do you get back to your truck or car? What are some of the ways around having 2 autos, 1 at put in and 1 at take out.

1) Paddle upstream and float back down.

2) Go with a buddy and park one car upstream and 1 down.

3) Float downstream and paddle like hell getting back upstream at the end of the day.

4) Pay for shuttle service.

Where is this Bass Pro Return Shop at in Thayer, I was all over that town a few months ago and did not see it? There was a guy between Thayer and Alton that had some Bass Pro return stuff, but was closed the last few times thru.

Hope you enjoy it. Is it a SOT? Been thinking about getting a solo canoe, but I'm waiting on a good deal. Ultimately I'd like to have a good tandem canoe, a solo canoe, a SOT kayak, and a river jon to fill all my river fishing needs. They all have their place, but the tandem canoe is all I have as of now.

Another way of getting around having two autos is to have a truck, a kayak, and a bicycle. Drop off your bike, then drive your kayak up to your put in, and paddle to your bike, then bike back to your truck. Not something I'll ever do, but it might work for some people. I'd be more likely to do the same thing, but with a small motor bike.

That's a pretty good deal on that 'Yak!

The easiest way to go solo is to paddle up, and float back - I do it all the time. You paddle up on the inside bend of the river (slower water), and float back down on the outside (faster water). You can fish the whole river this way, basically.
