Members Newbie Fly Posted November 19, 2010 Author Members Posted November 19, 2010 Yeah, I had a feeling the purists would give me guff about the bass comment. Oh well, maybe I shouldn't use an indicator either or be like the English only cast upstream with a dryfly to a rising fish. Fishin is fishing and if you can coax'em on a fly that's even better. I look at it as I am broadiing my horizons in the fishing world. However, I kind of like the trout fishin traditions and the whole art form mystique about it. I do think life is too short just to fly fish for trout. Coaxing a permit or bonefish on the flats with a fly rod is every bit as challenging as trying to hook a spooky brownie or rainbow The action at Bethel has been really good , sort of spoils you, as they surely do not act like trout in a stream. There are kids throwin rocks in the lake, dogs jumpin around ,spin casters throwin jigs and you can still catch 4- 5 or more an hour. Off to Bennett Sunday any ideas on what to go with ? I was thinkin Scuds and midges " I fish therefore I am"
strangercreek Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 Welcome to the forum. I envy any time you've been able to spend on the saltwater flats. Earlier this fall I got to chase some seatrout and red fish in the Indian River near Cocoa Beach (I think it was the Indian River?). No reds, only trout but what an awesome experience. I am hoping to go back a couple more times this winter. Gee, since seatrout spawn from april to september, maybe I should not have been fishing for them (kidding).

jjtroutbum Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 Yeah, I had a feeling the purists would give me guff about the bass comment. It's not the bass. It is fishing for them on the beds that get some upset here. Chief Grey Bear Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 I forgot to add that if you are going to point the finger and call others purist, I wouldn't be knocking spin fishermen. Members Newbie Fly Posted November 22, 2010 Author Members Posted November 22, 2010 Understand , I did mean weed beds though. I agree with the sportsman comment growing up saltwater fishing on the East Coast I saw the striper fishing be decimated and comeback due to conservation regs for 20 years ........ We used to shake heads when doing catch and release when yellowfin tuna fishing " I fish therefore I am"
Chief Grey Bear Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 ...I can coax him to go to my favorite bass lake this spring during the spawn and haul some fish of the beds Yeah, I had a feeling the purists would give me guff about the bass comment. Members Feltracer Posted December 9, 2010 Members Posted December 9, 2010 Since I know this guy too! You will be working right next to him and 5 min later he is gone! The computer is off, phone logged out and chair pushed in. When you head home for lunch, you can see him fishing away in trout stocked ponds.
