ryan Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 Rio makes a shock absorbing leader that has some more strech than others you should try that I use them from time to time with 7X tippets
Micheal Kyle Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 I have the rio shock gum in my store we are a lot closer. If you live in springfiled, if you live in Branson you might check with River run or Angler and Achery, I'm not sure if Phil has rio or not. The shock gum sells for 3.95. My number at the store is 417-889-6548 Michael To Know People Is To Know Thier Ways!
Bill Babler Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 Great post by jOrOb. Bass fisherman have a very strong tendency to drop the rod tip, prior to establishing a hookset. Using the 9'6" rod should allow you to maintain very nice contact with the fly or the indicator, whatever the case may be, as this is a slack picker-upper. A vertical lift with the rod in allignment with the fly, rather than a quick snap hook set should allow the rod to absorb the shock of the set and go alot easier on you 7X. You should have no problem with the 6X with a double surgen. Being on the commercial side of things, I have had very good results with 2lb. vanish. The diameter eludes me right now, but this line is very strong and has great shock absorbant. I have not had that good or results with mirage, or frog hair. I need to try the Rio. A couple of years ago, I preformed a test on several 4 lb test lines, by tying a bucket with a weight of 4lbs and testing the strength of several 4lb. lines, by lifting the bucket with a 7ft. rod and the 4lb. with about 4 ft. of line out. Every line I tested would lift the bucket without breaking, but the slighest quick snap or jerk would break them all. Vanish preformed the best, and frog hair was by far the worst, with mirage a close second to worst. Vanish also had the best total wt. pickup, it would pick up 12lbs, on a easy lift without breaking. I did not test the Rio. Guess I need more things to occupy my mind. PS I am not selling vanish or do I have any kind of arrangement with Berkley. http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted July 5, 2006 Root Admin Posted July 5, 2006 I sell Rio... for those who need to know. And I think Babler is a Berkly Secret Agent trying to get their paste-scent inpregnated into all our jigs/flies. Then Quinten would give us all tickets for using scented lures in the trophy zone. Seriouly... smell him next time you're around him! He'll try to blame it on a infected toe or something.
Bill Babler Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 Yip's my secret is out. I'll try and shower more often, except when I'm fishing with you. By the way, I'm thinking about the far North, we need to talk. Did you get through to Jim? We need to be a making plans if it's going to happen. http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
Members mobowhunter Posted July 7, 2006 Author Members Posted July 7, 2006 Went to Back Country Outfitters today, got the Shock Gum, it will be Sunday before I can try it out. If it works it will be a good deal. $4.00 for 25', not bad. I can give a full report after Sunday.
ColdWaterFshr Posted July 8, 2006 Posted July 8, 2006 I'm a big believer that 6 and 7x are WAY overrated. I fish a lot of gin clear, TINY, Missouri streams. Get some 5x or even 4x fluorocarbon and I strongly DOUBT you'll be missing many fish. I've fished with some real pro's and on the finnicky water they dont use tapered leaders, but only straight sections of 3x fluoro tied to the end of the fly line with the fly on the other end, and they do well on wild trout streams with VERY spooky fish. You may have trouble tying on 26's, but so what? The fish just aren't that smart, even on Taney, what with a 1,000,000 dumped per year.
Members mobowhunter Posted July 10, 2006 Author Members Posted July 10, 2006 Well the shock gum worked well. Neat stuff, it streches and returns to the original length. But I realy think I had some bad tippet all along. I triesd some fresh Orvis 6X Sunday and fished all day with no problems. I think the fluorocarbon is very sensitive to heat. I keep all my equipment in my work truck so I can fish after work. I try to keep it out of the direct sun, crack the windows, but I guess it's not enough. But, the shock gum will help with light tippets. I'm glad I found out about it. Thanks for all the advice.
