dennis boatman Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 Propaganda and filled with agenda... A strike indicator is just a bobber...
fishinwrench Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 Propaganda and filled with agenda... I'm afraid you have it backwards Dennis, "propaganda" is Monsanto saying they are doing wonderful things, and insisting that their signs be placed on fields NEXT TO THE HIGHWAY . The "agenda" is all theirs. Take a look at who is covering their butt... 'nuff said ? Who benefits if it's the other way around ?
Justin Spencer Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 I am fortunate enough to have some pasture and the time to tend to my own small herd of cattle and a sheep herd as well as raising chickens. We eat and raise most of our meat and try to raise vegatables, although our time is more stretched in the summer. What we don't produce ourselves we try to buy at farmers markets or natural food stores such as The Truck Patch in Mountain Home. In these hard economic times the more local we can buy the more we keep the money closer to home. It's fun going in to some of the smaller natural markets such as Mama Jean's in Springfield and Ava, or the Truck Patch and they actually have local farms labeled on some of their produce, as well as grass fed beef, pastured chicken, and at The Truck Patch they have wonderful seafood. If those of us in small areas can move to a more localized food web we can help ourselves with healthier products, help our local economy by supporting our neighbors and even reduce our carbon foot print by eating locally produced items. It's going to cost you more money in some cases, but well worth it in my opinion. Everyone has there own agenda and beliefs so if this isn't important to you so be it, but I for one like to know what goes into my meat, and if I can grow or buy heirloom produce I can be comfortable giving these to my kids. If you don't have the ability to raise your own livestock open up the horse trader and often you can find organic livestock that you can have butchered without even meeting the animal, we buy a pig every year split it with friends. Anytime you get big corporations such as Monsanto or Big Oil involved they look out for #1, they know they will always have consumers, and unfortunately we need them because of our shopping habits. fishinwrench Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 I hear ya, Justin. It seems that every angle is rapidly being covered to eliminate independant business and/or independant life in any way possible. My business is being stepped on more and more as time goes by, they have already made it to where I can't get access to tech info (ignition output specs, special tools, ect.) for troubleshooting both Honda and Suzuki outboards. I have to sign on with them specifically and attend their specific training courses in order to effectively work on them (which costs out the nose, and I only get a small handfull of Honda/Suzuki's each year... so it's not even worth it) It blows my mind that any corporation would want to produce and market an engine... and then eliminate the number of techs capable of servicing it properly. If you buy a Honda or Suzuki, and your local dealer goes tits-up, good luck getting parts and quality service for it later on. I have a 2008 130 Honda here right now that has been "out of service" for almost 2 months because of a tilt/trim relay and harness. How rediculis is that ? If it was a Merc., Yammie, or J/E he would have been back on the water in 20 minutes. I guarantee it will be the last Honda that person ever buys, but for some reason Honda doesn't seem to care. I just don't get it.
Gavin Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 All the bases are covered...You buy their seed, you sign on the line saying you wont save any to replant with it. The big corporate food machine scares me to some extent. I try to grow a little bit of our own produce & some herbs, buy from the local farmers market, and my sister raises the majority our beef & pork..Just got done with this years cut order as a matter of fact....I'd love to dump big AG for goood, but I like to eat too. Cheers.
fishinwrench Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 All bases are "legally" covered, but that is just SO wrong. You bought it...but you don't own it? Ya reckon anyone fully understood that when they signed the invoice ? And do ya thing Monsanto went to any effort at all to make sure they understood it ? Hell no. Again, trap set...Score ! If I sell someone a bird dog can I put in the paperwork (in really fine print buried under a watermark) that I get paid for any resultant offspring ?
3wt Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 Nope you don't own it. They own the rights to the genetic material, and rightfully so. If you think Monsanto is trying to trick people so they can sue them, then you are nuts. They have to protect their intellectual property against big guys and small guys. If they let the little guys go, they won't have legal standing to protect themselves against big guys. It's the way the system works. They have no interest in putting their customers out of business. This isn't a conspiracy. It's a company making a product that people want, and selling in such a way that they can actually cover their costs and make a proffit, and invest in R&D to make the next product. If they let people collect seed they would have to charge a cost that would never be marketable. R&D cost money. Genetic engineering costs money. Growing seed in such a way as to avoid hybridizing from other natural plants costs money. QA to make sure the seeds are genetically what they are supposed to be costs money. This isn't a ma and pa seed operation. It's high tech stuff, and if you want to benefit from it, they you have to pay the price that makes it all reality.
denjac Posted November 18, 2010 Author Posted November 18, 2010 I just dont think genetic material should be able to patented . Its a life whether plant or animal, where will they draw the line ?
