denjac Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 Then we can get to Jim Rogers and George Carson for other local color. After I got to know Jim I had cart blanche there . I think his daughter liked me and would custom paint crankbaits and jerbaits for me. I did purple when purple wasnt cool . Jim would say. what do you want with cranlkbaits , there just tourist baits, if you want to catch fish throw a grub or a jig . He was sure a nice man and so was his wife Babe. dave potts Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 If you are ever in Lamar, Mo (about 35 miles north of Joplin) stop in the old Jim Rogers bait and tackle store. The walls are absolutely covered with trophys and awards he won over the years. Another old name not mentioned is Jerry McGinnis (sp?). He used to have a good show also and was one of the early ones. Don't know if he is still alive or not. Dave
mhall02 Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 How about Harold Ensley? Another gem of a man. Met him once when he was giving a fillet knife seminar at the Wal-Mart in Monett Wal-Mart sold stuff with his name on it for years, really nice fellow. Dad bought a knife and it is his takle box in my garage. Miss my Dad as well as Harold's show, where has the time gone? Also briefly met Virgil in the Wal-Mart parking lot in Branson, he was walking in and I was going out, briefly shook his hand and said I've enjoyed his shows over the years, since I was a kid, then I quickly moved on. Didn't want to bug him too much.
zipstick Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 I did a smallie river show with McKinnis back in about '86. Caught 'em good on my topwater, but I was pissed when he made me go back in my room the second day to change back into my sweaty clothes from the first day. He wanted to make two days appear as one for filming. (Welcome to Hollywood.) He and his group just bought BASS a few months ago. So he's still kickin' it pretty good.
zipstick Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 No one named two of Harold's favorite lures....yet.
mhall02 Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 Harold liked the Puddlejumper, I used to use them and caught about everything on 'em. Channel cat, trout, smallmouth, rock bass, you name it.

Do you mean the Bassmasters? Speaking of Hollywood dickering with the program reminded me of a story in the St Louis Post years ago. Someone wrote in and said he and his wife were fishing a lake somewhere and saw Roland Martin taping a show. Said he saw a scuba diver out of view attaching big bass from a wire cage to his hook to appear that he was catching them. I always suspected Bill Dance used the same tactic. He catches more five pounders in a half hour show than I do all season! Dave
dennis boatman Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 How about The Reaper as one...and Beetle Spin. A strike indicator is just a bobber...
