Smalliebigs Posted December 27, 2010 Posted December 27, 2010 I always like these threads!! My very cool wife gave me $300 in BPS gift cards for Christmas. I thought I would add another baitcaster to the mountain of tackle in my fishermans dude den. I lost or it was actually stolen from the dock at Indian Point a Shimano Curado, which I have always enjoyed. My dad swears the BPS Johnny Morris signature and gold series are just as good as the Curado. I could save the money and go with the BPS reel, I just don't have any experience with them. I was wondering if there are any opinions or if any of you have used both of these reels. Thanks for the opinions and this week would be a good week to go hit the winter smallies holes on the Meramec....I'm down for Thursday, might put in @ Stanton. Thanks fellas and Cricket did you catch anything on your Bday??? smallies that is.
rps Posted December 27, 2010 Posted December 27, 2010 Had a Curado E7 because I loved the earlier models. It self destructed, twice. Bought an Okuma Serrano in May. Fished it hard all summer and fall. Very good reel. The next reel I buy will be another Serrano. Google Tackle Tour and read their review of the reel. I have never fished the JM Gold Series because the lower end reels did not stand up to use. Maybe his upper end stuff is better made.
Stoneroller Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 the bps johnny morris series are built by quantum if i'm not mistaken. someone may be able to confirm or deny that for me. I just recently picked up a couple of okuma spinning reels, haven't used them yet, cause someone keeps flaking out on me when I ask him to go fishing.... ahem... anyway, christmas has allowed me to replace and expand my rod/reel collection too. looks like it was a good christmas for most everyone. gotmuddy Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 I have 5 of the BPS johnny morris reels in all three speeds and I love them. I found a pair of the gold series reels for $200, gonna get them in january. everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.
Al Agnew Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 The only BPS casting reels I've used are the Prolite Finesse, both the older one and the later one. Most comparable reel I've fished is the old Green Curado 100. The Prolite Finesse reels are smooth and durable, but my green Curados are better casting light lures. In my opinion, the new model Curados are a little overpriced, but I'm sure they are excellent reels.

Man, you are not kidding there Al, the Curado's are a bit pricy....or like you said pricer than before?????
Quillback Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 I've heard good things about the JM Gold on other bass forums, never tried one myself. I do have a Curado, it's a not a bad reel, but I prefer my Revo Premiers.
jeb Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 I have both the JM Gold and Curado 200E7 in my boat and use them often. Both have been in use for 9+ months, fishing usually 3-4 days a week. Not a single issue with either. The Curado is a little easier to palm, if that's important to you. I think the DBS on the gold gives it more range of application. Works better for smaller baits, for example. The chrome finish, like my Calais DC, is cold in the hands on a cold day, though. And I did switch out the knobs on the gold for EVA ones included with the reel. I couldn't get used to the finned ones. But if I were buying another baitcaster in that price range, like Quillback, I'd for sure pick another Revo Premier (2010 version only, 10 bearing model). Fantastic reels that are way underpriced for the value. I have 4 of them now and prefer them to my Core 50MG7, Curado and JM gold. Just a super light, super smooth, very strong drag and very versatile reel. John B 08 Skeeter SL210, 225F Yamaha
