Tim Smith Posted January 5, 2011 Author Posted January 5, 2011 The hypoxia was what I was thinking since everything in SEMO was iced up last week, but was wondering why only the drum, but they may be the only fish in that stretch. Interesting. Was there also ice a little further south in NWArk? It also usually takes some time for hypoxia to take hold and you have to have snow or thick grey ice to keep the light out. Black ice won't easily winter kill fish. Also, even the mainstem rivers in Colorado aren't fully iced yet. Slow runs and backwaters yes. Maybe it was a big shallow backwater area with an organic bottom where the fish got trapped and there was enough grey ice to cause winter kill? Maybe the drum were just the most sensitive species, or like you say the only species that used that particular habitat and they took the hit? But...at least one of the eye witness accounts also said they pulled the dying fish out of the water in the mainstem (with no ice) and they were still struggling and gilling and alive. That doesn't sound like hypoxia.
flytyer57 Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 Not sure of what killed the fish, but as for the birds, we all know it was those darned wind mills. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.

I doubt it, Arkansas does not use that much electricity. They still use candles and wood stoves. taxidermist Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 Come one its kerosene lamps and wood stoves! Get it right. This kerosene powered computer is pretty slow! On the fish kill I am thinking that maybe something the drum ingested, like mussels with a toxin. Breaking news on the birds, Wonder woman was flying her invisible airplane and ran into the birds.
Justin Spencer Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 I'd like to try and link the fish kill and the bird kill together somehow to support a conspiracy theory. It is odd that it is only drum that were affected and looks like the kill occurred in a short time frame, as did the bird kill obviously. Why could it be just the drum and no other fish. I say it's due to the large earbones of the drum which enhance hearing and allow for orienting in dark or turbid water. The long lateral line, which extends from the gill to the tip of the tail, also increases the fish's ability to locate and attack prey where vision is limited. Could this make them susceptible to some sort of sonic boom that might not kill other fish with a less sophisticated sensory system, my answer is yes. Usually hypoxia will kill the larger fish first and smaller fish many times will survive so I don't think this is a good explanation. It has to either be Aliens, Wonder woman's crazy plane, crazy atmospheric booms that humans can't hear (but blackbirds and drum can), or maybe a fight between Clinton and Huckabee that caused some sort of reaction among certain species of animals. Either way it is quite strange, quite interesting, and may be the beginning of the end. I suggest viewing the movie 2012 and start building a spacecraft that will get you to the moon. fishinwrench Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 Maybe they were playing with HAARP, possibly trying to bust up that storm front that was moving through.
gotmuddy Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 I doubt it, Arkansas does not use that much electricity. They still use candles and wood stoves. I happily use a wood stove, it saves me money and the environment. The government deemed that using wood to heat with is carbon nuetral. everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.
jdmidwest Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 It has been almost a week now, anyone heard any new news on this strange happening? "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
jdmidwest Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Never mind, I googled it and found lots of answers. The Drum bit the dust first. Blackbirds in BeeBe was the next day. LA was hit on Mon. Hard to blame the weather on this one. The birds demise... What killed the birds. The fishes demise, best guess... Drum Kill Of course, The Mayans May Have Something to DO with IT... Mayans Still, the firework dilema. Is the south trying to outlaw fireworks for some reason?? LA has mass kill Could it be something as simple as overpopulation? fishinwrench Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Why are all the dead Drum missing their eyes ?
