MOsmallies Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Gavin, Here is your picture...These don't have the weed guards trimmed or separated yet Mitch & Al... Those jigs look killer!!! Great idea on the brush hog dissection for trailers. I assume your using the baby brush hog? Paul MOsmallies
exiledguide Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Myself I use every kind of hair feather whatever is available. Depends on the lure I'm doing and the fish I'm after. Sorta like this. Are those red matzuo hooks?
Al Agnew Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Mitch & Al... Those jigs look killer!!! Great idea on the brush hog dissection for trailers. I assume your using the baby brush hog? Paul MOsmallies Nope, that's the regular Brush Hog. The Baby one wouldn't make big enough trailers when you dissect it. These trailers are about 2 inches long. I don't know whether it makes any difference in reality, but I like tying with crosscut rabbit strips because I think the hide wrapped around the shank of the hook gives the fish a bit more of a "meaty" feel when they have it in their mouth, compared to material like craft hair or marabou tied just to the area right behind the head. Maybe they hold onto it a bit longer because of that. With the usually subtle bites you get in the winter, you need the fish to hold it in their mouths as long as possible. Besides, it's really easy to tie with rabbit strips. I hate working with marabou except as little accents, like the tail of a Woolybugger. Has anybody else found that hair jigs don't work nearly as well in warm water as they do in cold water? I've used mine off and on quite a bit in the summer, without much success to show for it.

I had an old spinnerbait that got chewed up by a northern pike so I discarded the silicone skirt and tied rabbit strips to it. It had two white tails and a collar of red. That thing never caught another fish again which was kind of odd since red and white are good colors for pike. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
