trout fanatic Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Recently I have been stocking up on hooks. I have mostly used Tiemco and Mustads until I recently bought a batch of Dai riki's and discovered (much to my surprise) that I like them and they are easier on the wallet than the Tiemco's. Has anyone tied on the Allen hooks? How about any others (I have tied on some Daiichies and like them as well).
Danoinark Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 I have quite a few of the Allen Hooks. They are TMC and are very adequate. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
jdmidwest Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 I have always used Orvis which I think are probably made by Daiichi, but not positive. I get them at a discount so the price is hard to beat. I have also tyed on hooks from Togen's, they have some great bulk pricing and a hook about the same quality as mustad. Terry Beeson Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 Let's take a look in my tying materials... Daiichi Tiemco Dai Riki Mustad Gamakatzu Lightning Strike (Wapsi) I guess I use a little bit of everything... Kind of depends on what I'm tying and why... ekl-stl Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 I have a little bit of everything.. I will second the Togen hooks. Especially big hooks for streamers or double bunnies.
troutfiend1985 Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 I am a Teimco guy, but I think my next order will be Allen hooks. I am really becoming a midge guy and I wish that Allen hooks made sizes down to 24, but it seems that they stop at 18 so my midges will still be Teimco. I have also tried Eagle Claw hooks and I would recommend them to a friend. Price is right and your not losing anything IMO. The only drawback is if you’re a midge guy you will have to look somewhere else for anything below sz. 20. “The greatest menace to freedom is an inert people” J. Brandeis
fishinwrench Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 I am really becoming a midge guy and I wish that Allen hooks made sizes down to 24, No you don't. IMO if you're fishing tiny flies the place to skimp shouldn't be the hook. Have you tried the TMC 500U ?
Gavin Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 I'll use just about anything....but its got to be sharp and able to hold the fish I expect to catch...then I look at price. Cheers.
Members Jeff Hearn Posted January 11, 2011 Members Posted January 11, 2011 Any hook that ends in SPBL by Tiemco......Partridge, Hanak, Skalka, Dohiku.....Very few barbed any more except for Stones and Streamers.....Cost matters but catching makes me the happiest.....As a function of rod and reel cost, even a boat, hooks are a small piece of this.......Buy the best hooks you can find and buy good flurocarbon......SPBL = Confidence in my book Jeff
