Due to recent public backlash stemming from the Missouri Department of Conservations complete lack of professionalism and leadership surrounding a Mt. Lion poaching, the MDC has decide to change it's name from Missouri Dept. of Conservation to Missouir Dept. of Complacency. In a related move MDC has annouce the hiring of Michael Vick to head the dept. citing his outstanding work with animals in the past, Dept. spokesman, Bubba Frank, said the dept. 'looks forward to letting Mr. Vick take care of the states' wildlife'. "We figure it's easiery to do our job if there are less of these pesky animals running around. Mike Vick is our hero"

Other planned changes include 'ridding Missouri of all those drafty caves' by using them for landfill sites, "Thinning the eagle population" to improve quail numbers, and cutting down all those darn trees so we can have better views of the hills.

You forgot...

... "and just dump all the currently housed trout stock into the rivers and call it a day. If they make it and start reproducing... GREAT, if not... Too bad !"

Rural politics is a nasty business, but as long as there are constituents out in the sticks, it will continue to be a factor. I recommend holding your nose and being thankful for the good things MDC does...and they DO do some good things.

I said do do.

they DO do some good things

I've seen career criminals do some really good things before too.

That's the difference between a "career criminal" and just a plain ol'criminal.

Hmmm, defense of the MDC as well as 3rd grade humor?

You've been hanging out with Chief again, haven't you? Keep layin' around with liberal dogs like us and you're bound to come home with fleas...

I think the Missouri Department of Conservation is making a big mistake by not prosecuting in the Mountain Lion case. But I will not in any way get behind the wholesale attacks on the MDC. I would say their record on working to bring back native species has been very positive up until this point.

They successfully reintroduced River otters, despite heavy criticism. And I do maintain that was the right thing to do, even if it happens to make the fishing a bit tougher in some areas.

They are in the process of reintroducing elk.

They have given black bear the necessary protections needed for them to re-introduce themselves.

They have brought back deer and turkey from near extinction in Missouri.

So yes, they made a mistake. A big one. But I'd be willing to say that the MDC, over the course of the years, has done a lot more good than just about any other wing of the government. Everyone on here knows that often criticize the MDC about many things, (trout and smallmouth bass management especially, and now this) but that doesn't mean I don't think they do a good job as a general rule.

it is our job as citizens and taxpayers to be critical of the gov't entities that our money goes to fund. As Sportsmen, it's the principle of the issue that we should support. I'm just making a bit of light over the situation. MDC does do a decent job in many other aspects of it's operations. I just feel if you are going to be the "Conservation Dept." then 'conservation' should be your main focus.

Coming from Kansas and having worked for KDWP be thankful for what we have. The MDC does a great job in the areas of education and public relations. The different education centers they have and the things they do with schools are much better than what they have in Kansas. They have many conservation areas that are managed for different hunting opportunities, and do a pretty good job of managing the streams and lakes of the state. We have a great magazine and a good kids magazine also. Trying to get people to enjoy the outdoors and having a place for them to do it should be one of their main goals, and I think they do this pretty well. There will always be room for improvement in the areas of law enforcement, but for the most part people who are going to cause problems will find ways around the law. We can never have enough people to enforce all the game laws over such a large expanse of wilderness. I think they have decided their money is better spent educating people as to why the laws are in place, and then hoping this decreases violations.

Missourians need to be thankful for the department we have, I am certain we are much better off than most states, by far. We are generally a society of complainers so I'm sure we'll continue to b#@!tch and moan about the job they are doing (I don't agree with everything they do either), but overall I think we are fortunate to have them overseeing the wildlife and fisheries of this great state.
