Fly_Guy Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Just accepted a job in Lenoir NC, in the foothills of the blue ridge mountains. I've done a moderate amount of research that suggests that there are populations of wild rainbow, brown and brook trout in the mountains. Anyone every fish this area? The rest of NC seems to be bass/catfish until you get to the coast. It's hard to leave one of the best fishing areas in the country (in terms of diversity of species, and quality), but I've always wanted to surf fish, so win some lose some. Any info would be greatly appreciated! And I'd also like to say thanks to all the folks on the forum who have helped my out around here with the fishing reports and advice. Hopefully I was able to recripricate in part.
smallmouthjoe Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Sad to see ya go but happy to hear that people with biology degrees from MSU can get jobs. Assuming you are working in the field. Another forum I frequent is Riverbassin.com, they have alot of good guys there and the site has divided the country into regions and divided the regions into local state forums. Here's the one on NC, it looks pretty nice. http://riverbassin.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?20-North-Carolina
Gavin Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Lots of good smallmouth fishing out that way...trout too...not far from the ocean...I'm sure you'll find plenty to do. Best of luck with your new career. Cheers.
mic Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Please send back a report from your first trip to the water and let know what we are missing.
eric1978 Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 It's beautiful country out there...grab your 3wt and wander into the mountains. You'll surely find some fish and spectacular scenery. Good luck.

So I kinda know how you feel about how you're gonna miss the place. The Ozarks are certainly awesome.
Fly_Guy Posted January 14, 2011 Author Posted January 14, 2011 Thanks all. Gonna miss the ozarks "fo sho". I'll post the occasional report when the fishing gets started (I'd probably better focus on work for a little while). Thanks for the link smthjoe - MSU grads can get jobs (though mine's in the lab - not the field), but there are jobs out there. It took a solid 4 months for something worthwhile to happen. As eric says - the scenery is amazing! I'm itching to get out there and poke around.
exiledguide Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Good luck, beautiful country never fished there the year I vacationed there we stopped at Gatlinburg on the way back and fished a straem in the National Park for trout and a stream at Severvile ? for smallmouth and then 3 days at Dale Hollow. I always wished we had taken the time to fish in North Carolina. Let us know how it turns out.
ozark trout fisher Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 The fishing is certainly good in the North Carolina part of the Smokies/Blue Ridge-been there once. I spent a week fishing the South Toe River a few years back, and the fishing was excellent for rainbows- and brookies once we got up in the small streams near the headwaters. That was before I started fly fishing, but I'd like to get back there with a fly rod sometime. That'll be a great area for you to live and fish.
