I might be able to get out this week, but I was wondering if the spawn is still on. HAs anyone been down lately? If so, are there still signs of active spawning?

If there is spawning I guess I'll go somewhere else. Thanks in advance.

Fished Crane this past weekend. Caught fish on hare's ear size 12-14. Creek is low even with snow and rain, I was using 6x fluorocarbon for nymphs. Have not seen any redds and majority of big spawning size fish I have seen are in deeper water. I'm not a expert, but I think the spawn has already passed. I saw a post here not too long ago about a guy seeing redds at the city park, but I'm not so sure I saw any. I caught a good 12-13 incher a few weeks ago and it was not in spawning colors (compared to other photos I've seen of both McClouds in spawning colors) I definitely haven't seen any redds on the lower access. The upper access water is even lower, but it seems to be coming up.

As many of you know Izaak Walton is arguably one of the founders of the sport of fly fishing and is certainly the founder of fly fishing literature. The Compleat Angler is the most printed book in the Engliah language behind the Bible. Izaak said it best 400 years ago:

But above all, the taking of Fish in Spawning time may be said to be against nature; it is like take the dam on her nest when she hatches her young: a sin so against nature, that Almighty God hath in the Levitical law made a law against it.

Walton simply didn't fish from about December to April because was willing to deprive himself of some pleasure in order to avoid even the possibility -- however remote -- of damaging the resource which provided that pleasure.

Yeah, but he kept everything he caught. wink.gif

I tried to read Compleat Angler, but could only get about halfway through. Booooring.

So, are you telling me they are still spawning?

I thought wild trout spawned in late april. Probably to dang cold, or frozen water, for him to fish through that timeframe. I think I've seen walton's name on the lunker board at bssp.

I believe a secondary spawn has started, with the snow coming in if the river rises they should spawn again, and possibly once or twice more, then remember at least 21 days after the last sign of spawning the eggs will finally hatch. See you back on the trout streams in a few months troutfriend, while your avoiding harming the resource I'll be carefully catching them without harming the resource. By then the smallmouth will be spawning so there goes a few more months people should avoid fishing. I guess if MDC really cared they would only allow fishing from July-August.

If nothing else I am gratified by the tone of all these exchanges. We may disagree but we can do it respectfully. This doesn't always happen on this forum but seems to be happening in this thread -- at least so far!

I agree that it's fine to carefully fish when the fish are not actively spawning -- but fishing for spawning fish really is poor form.

And yeah Walton kept what he caught! And fished with bait etc. But there were a lot more fish and fewer fishermen back then. Plus he helped pepetuate the fish by not fishing for spawners...
