Tim Smith Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 The only way any country will go for another source of energy is if it is cheaper. ...lots of ways to make something cheaper. All kinds of things affect the bottom line.

Tim Smith Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 taxing something into oblivion wont help anyone. Muddy. You've got a mind. You should give other people credit for putting actual thought into things too. I'm in a project right now that has helped bring about a 25% reduction in pollution in an industry without any government help at all. NONE. The fuel tax solution will only work when there is a viable alternative. Until then it only crushes the economy and creates backlash.
Tim Smith Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Not to mention Three Mile was a human failure more than a tech failure. You were on a roll till you hit that note. Excuses are always hollow after the fact...no matter what the reason.
flytyer57 Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 One thing about the Chinese and Indians. They ain't stupid. They know that AT PRESENT, fossil fuel drives their economy as much as it does America's economy, and they are going to ride fossil fuels as long as they have to. But they also know that fossil fuels have environmental costs, and if and when viable alternatives come along, they are going to embrace them. That's why it's so imperative that we (and by we I mean America ideally but SOMEBODY) set the highest priority on those viable alternatives. Because NOBODY is going to willingly go without energy, nor pay more for it than they have to. Not to mention that China, if not India too, is leading the US in the development of alternative fuel sources. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
podum Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Tim, you are right that excuses are hollow, but the "catastrophe" that was three mile is a pimple compared to what most climate change activists claim is being done daily by fossil fuel power gen. And that was one accident, with minimal (though highly publicized) impact in the course of 40+ nuke plants generating during the past 40 years in the US. And, the crime of it is that virtually no new plants incorporating new, better tech have been built in 25+ years. Criminal, if the complaints about the harms of coal and gas are to be taken at face value. I wish I had more time more than I wish I had more money.
kevthebassman Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Neither will the oil companies, so your boys on the right won't have it either. And if we had the will, we could boycott or tariff Chinese and Indian products until they got their environmental act together...they need the US to sell all their cheap garbage to, and I for one would be happy to pay a little more for higher quality products if they were made in the USA by American workers being paid a livable wage. But your boys on the right would never have that, either...too many uber-wealthy with overseas businesses would be affected. If you think that the right are "my boys," you need to go back and read my post carefully. I specifically call out the oil lobby and their cronies, including certain talking heads whom shall remain nameless.

I guess I just assumed after I read "leftist eco-nazis" that you were somewhere out in right field with Rush. I'm with you on the nuclear, as long as it's NIMBY and east of St. Louis. I don't need my baby growing a third arm out of her forehead...she already has two where they belong.
Wayne SW/MO Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 And I'm sure you don't want it in your backyard either. I wouldn't exactly call the Nevada desert a backyard. Ever been there? Do a little research on what settles in your backyard today from coal powered plants. Byproducts of power thermal plant operation need to be considered in both the design and operation. Waste heat due to the finite efficiency of the power cycle must be released to the atmosphere, using a cooling tower, or river or lake water as a cooling medium. The flue gas from combustion of the fossil fuels is discharged to the air; this contains carbon dioxide and water vapour, as well as other substances such as nitrogen, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, and (in the case of coal-fired plants) fly ash, mercury and traces of other metals. Solid waste ash from coal-fired boilers must also be removed. Some coal ash can be recycled for building materials. Fossil fueled power stations are major emitters of CO2, the most important greenhouse gas (GHG) which according to the consensus of scientific organisations is a major contributor to the global warming observed over the last 100 years. Brown coal emits 3 times as much CO2 as natural gas, black coal emits twice as much CO2 per unit of electric energy. Carbon capture and storage of emissions are not expected to be available on a commercial economically viable basis until 2025. So this is preferable to water vapor and controlled ,captured spent fuel? Then there is this. Hidden Cost Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
