Gavin Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Nice report...but I'd be more concerned about black bears on the 11pt...lots of sightings down that way. Cheers.
snap Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Al, glad to see you made it down to the 11 point after so long of a time...and to hear you had much better fishing compared to ??? ...30 years ago....??? We see eagles every trip and it seems like some of them are tame as close as one can get to them. Don't get tired of the other scenery either!!! Also, sounds like you had the river to yourself, unlike the Current. What route did you take to get there? We have found that going to Ironton and hitting 21 down to 60 is the best/easiest drive.
Al Agnew Posted February 1, 2011 Author Posted February 1, 2011 Snap, this time I went down 67 and across 160, even though I knew it probably wasn't the quickest way. 160 is SLOW driving. But I wasn't in any big hurry. I know that if I'm going to Van Buren, your route is pretty quick. But once they get 67 finished so that it's four lane all the way to Poplar Bluff, it may end up being quicker to go down 67 to 49 and A to Elsinore where you pick up 60. Or if you like to drive fairly fast on really curvy highways (Mary swears I was a wannabe Mario Andretti) 67 to 34 and across 34 and HH to 60 would be pretty quick. I came back that way a few weeks ago from Van Buren, and it took exactly two hours to get from Big Spring to home.
Gavin Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 34 south out of Piedmont is a good one if you like roller coasters;>)!
Tim Smith Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Nice report...but I'd be more concerned about black bears on the 11pt...lots of sightings down that way. Cheers. (Hibernation?)
Tim Smith Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Creek chubs have a little bigger mouths and smaller scales and are colored differently. That is a striped shiner, the largest Misssouri shiner. (When will bighead carp qualify?)
laker67 Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Just like RPS stated, right out of field and stream. Very good Al, thanks for sharing.
snap Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 we have tried them all over the years, and you are right, 160 is a slow way to go. (and in the early years, that was our main route...young and dumb!!!!) 67 to 60 may be the easiest in the future but have decided won't be going through Piedmont in the meantime...have also found some nice smallmouth in the forks of the Black...esp the middle...if not in a hurry to get there or get back home!!! I agree with others, GREAT READ!!!!...
techo Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 I have read your report many times and was left kind of speechless. I really enjoy your work, your posts and your thoughts. It is especially pleasing as I watch the weather outside today. Thank you. I guess I lost the speechless part now though! Tim Carpenter
Outside Bend Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Good read Al, I must've missed you at Tan Vat- we got there around 8:30 and left around 5:30. Our day was pretty off and on- a few fish here and there, but nothing really consistent. Glad to see you had a good trip! <{{{><
