troutfiend1985 Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 I've watched this guys video a few times, and have tried it myself. It seems that these leaders could work pretty well, and it would be something you could do in case of snapping a leader off without a replacement. exiledguide Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Try it let me know how it turns out. It was a total waste of time energy and acouple of bucks for me but unlike a lot of my projects it did not require a fire estinguisher, trip to the emergency room or visits to the chiropractor.
troutfiend1985 Posted February 3, 2011 Author Posted February 3, 2011 I've already made a few. Haven't had a chance to try it yet. Looks like it would work for me, esecially bass fishing on the fly rod. Let you know when I try it. “The greatest menace to freedom is an inert people” J. Brandeis
Trout Commander Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 What is the purpose of a spun (they aren't furled btw) leader in mono? I have a colored furled leader made out of thread to use instead of a strike indicator, but I am uneducated to the benefits of one in mono. I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted. The latest Trout Commander blog post: Niangua River Six Pack

Got me, I'm not selling it to anyone merely only posting it as information. I know that it isn't furled(the guy on the video calls them furled), but I really have no clue as to a material difference between a spun leader and a furled leader. I would suppose the purpose of a spun mono leader would be the same of any leader in that they serve as a connection between the fly line and fly itself. However I gather that maybe you're meaning advantages? If so I would have no legitimate answer to as I have not tested them in real fishing, but merely testing one outside on an 8 weight. I do know that the leaders I've made in this manner are very limp and seem to be able to turn over a popper quite well in the backyard. “The greatest menace to freedom is an inert people” J. Brandeis
grizwilson Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 These guys, Craig Phillips and Captian Sodie fish for IGFA world line records. Notice he uses Ande line as it has the most accurate label in test strength. I have messed with it a bit, can build a heavy butt to turnover a sculptin or something heavy. Have also used some of that Bass pro saltwater line in yellow for the butt to make a strike indicator..... seems to be a lot of work for a $3 leader, but it does give you the ability to customize. “If a cluttered desk is a sign, of a cluttered mind, of what then, is an empty desk a sign?”- Albert Einstein

Yeah sorry the (its not furled) wasn't directed at you, I could tell you knew the difference by your title and seeing as how Captain Sodie doesn't frequent OAF I should have just left it out of my post. I use Berkley vanish in 6 or 8 lb test for a leader when I don't use the colored furled one. It is readily available and inexpensive enough as far as leaders go and it turns over everything I have tried to throw so far. I will make a spun leader and try it out. Maybe I don't really know an easy turn over yet. These guys, Craig Phillips and Captian Sodie fish for IGFA world line records. That explains a lot, makes since for that type of fishing. I don't know how much someone using 8-3x tippet could really benefit from the added strength of using even 2 or 4 lb mono, but if your after huge record (saltwater especially) fish on the fly I can see the advantages. Thanks guys, you learn something everyday. I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted. The latest Trout Commander blog post: Niangua River Six Pack
Members Bassfly Posted February 4, 2011 Members Posted February 4, 2011 It doesn't really matter if they are furled or just twisted, these leaders serve a purpose. For the small trout flies then whatever is just fine. But when you start tossing some meat you will appreciate a leader that has some body to it. It's not about the added strength in the lb. test, it's about turning over heavy wind resistant flies.

My comment was about making furled leaders, I have used them for the past year and they are great for bass flies and poppers.
Gavin Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 They look easy to make....will have to give them a shot. Thanks.
