6'4" & 250lbs, I dont think a solo canoe like the Vagabond is for you. But your welcome to try mine. I've been looking at toons since I paddled Justin's on the North Fork in November. The NFO Outlaw boats you mentioned look pretty nice and I think they would work well for you. No frame to putz with, light weight... I'd probably get the trolling motor mount for ponds & slow rivers. Cheers.

Gavin - Your comments pretty much reflect what I was thinking. I have owned several canoes (15' to 17') over the years, and as the knees got steadily worse the shorter the time I could sit in a canoe. I tried one SOT kayak, and that did not work at all. I did find out the NFO offers an upgraded seat as an option for the frameless pontoons, with EVA padding and more support. I also agree that the trolling motor mount would be the way to go for still/slow water. However, the NFO pontoons are expensive, and I do not want to pull the trigger without trying one out. I will keep looking!

I look in my fly box and think about what should guide my choice of the best fly: the amount/angle of sun on the water, the water temp & clarity, what bugs are hatching, what the fish might be eating, and what worked last time. Then I remember what an old man told me... " Ninety percent of what a trout eats is brown, fuzzy, about 1/2 inch long and underwater."

If you have a bad back, you really should try one before buying. Rowing one of them could put a lot of strain on the back.

There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.

My old town pack is in the 30# range, but the seat is low, afraid higher will become wetter..... right now would be a stable icefishing platform on my pond

Wow those are pricey...I'd probably go with something heavier that costs less...maybe an aluminum framed toon with a standing platform & lean bar. Think NFO still sells the Madison & Skycomish for a couple hundred less and Fishcat has a 10 standup model..Just park close to the water.

Just park close to the water.

Or get a boat cart. I bought one for my kayak. No carrying a 70# yak to the water for me. Just put it on the cart and wheel it to the water.

I have owned about 6 different brands of boats.. and my favorite is still the JWOutfitters Renegade. Its 8'6", perfect for flattish water and will row circles around any other boat on the market to this day. Mine is yellow top/gray bottom and broken down into the 4 pieces at the moment... but I am going to put it together and fish some ponds due to this high water of the last week.

What to avoid.. heavy boats with no usable features. Most your cheapies are made of steel and weigh in at 85lbs+.

What to look for, aircraft grade aluminum whitewater frames, a rowing position that is set forward to maximize your exertion on strokes.. oars that are longer so you are not digging to deep to try to get ahead, and a built in drop anchor system.

My Renegade is 42lbs without my 8lb mushroom anchor hanging off the back off the easy to use anchor system.

I will get some pics of the boat and truck I use for it up tomorrow.
