HighPlainsFlyFisher Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 This topic doesn't get much attention so I figured I'd throw up a post for all you rough-fish enthusiasts out there. Landed my biggest fish to date yesterday (on the long-rod) and several others that put a good bend in the rod as well. The full TR with pics is on my blog if you're interested. FishinCricket Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Nice report! That's a fatass very large fish on a 5wt! Kudos on your diligence, you have my respect! (not that that's worth much, lol) cricket.c21.com
snagged in outlet 3 Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Nice!!! Any idea of the water temp? I caught my first asian while chasing hybrids. I've caught whites, largemouth, hybrids, drum, buffs, common carp, gar and asians all on a nine weight. They'll wear out your tackle that's for sure. Be prepared, someone will say that those fish don't take flies intentionally. I think they do. Thanks for the report. Pete
HighPlainsFlyFisher Posted February 16, 2011 Author Posted February 16, 2011 I can tell you with no uncertain terms that they take flies intentionally. Not only did I fair hook several yesterday but have done so in previous outings as well. They're pretty prevalent in the waters I frequent here in Kansas and Myself and many others target and catch them on flies regularly. You're right though , theres always gonna be a naysayer in the group. I don't know the water temp but considering it's eastern Kansas I can tell you it's still pretty cold. Those fish below that spillway get pretty hungry until they start releasing more water (and therefore food) through the gates , I think it's been a long winter and they're just ready to eat. I know they're a nuisance fish but since I can't change that and they're already here I'm gonna take advantage of it and stick a few whenever I can , trust me it's well worth the effort!
eric1978 Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Good pics and a nice report there. I hope you stomped his brains out after you took your pics.
Flysmallie Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 I hope you stomped his brains out after you took your pics. Ok, I haven't said anything in a long time. Someone needs to have you checked. Why are you so angry? Â Â
Members jim laing Posted February 16, 2011 Members Posted February 16, 2011 Below these dams in S. Illinois you can watch Asian Carp filter feed all day without moving. If you can find them when they are spawning, you will experience extremely aggressive behavior and these guys will move several feet to take out (eat) a fly. Lots of fun on an 8 weight.
snagged in outlet 3 Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Post up some pics Jim. Pent up anger like that is usually the result of the lack of female companioship. That's just a guess though. Pete
