podum
Looking for a casting rod for lightish crankbaits (shad raps, fat free shad, etc . . .). I've never been happy with any of my rods for these baits. While fine for spinnerbaits, jigs and plastics, I've struggled with throwing crankbaits on these outfits especially with any wind. Suggestions in the > $80 range? I wish I had more time more than I wish I had more money.
Stoneroller
Ugly Stick Lite series. they have the legendary ugly stick durability with the softer tip and moderate action you need for crankbaits. $40/rod. got mine at basspro Fish On Kayak Adventures, LLC. Al Agnew
What you're asking for happens to be one of the most difficult things to find...a really good, reasonably priced, lightweight crankbait rod. I detest the glass or glass/graphite composites...too mushy, too heavy, feel horrible in your hand. And apparently practically nobody sees a need for a medium light, moderate action graphite rod, which is the perfect crankbait rod. I spent the dough for a Loomis crankbait special 6.5 footer for use in my boat (well, I did get it on a special sale for pretty cheap for a Loomis), and in my canoes I use a $40 Bass Pro medium light 5.5 footer that seems to work pretty well. In the past I've made my own out of medium light spinning rod blanks.
Larry Richards
Check out the 6'6" or 6'9" medium Falcon HD series that is in your price range $69.99 very nice rods for the money
RSBreth
I've always used Med/light or Medium Spinning gear to throw light cranks. It's just easier - especially on windy days.
Ham
Browning Medallion GT 6' medium. Used to be a great value, but have gotten a little more expensive. They put them sale a couple times a year. I absolutely love that little rod. I bought four of them as backups last time they dropped them to $40. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. Billfo
For the money I like the Bass Pro CRANKIN STICK. The longer the better ! smallmouthjoe
I use a 6' Med Cabela's pro-guide for my small cranks on rivers. It has the feel of a med-lt and is a good rod. It's on sale for 30$ bucks right now and I may have to buy a couple more. Also Ham's suggestion on the browning medallion series is a good one, I have to rods from that series and really like them. dwiebenga
I have a 7'0 Medium BP Crankin Stick that I am trying to sell. I am only asking $25 for the rod and $15 to ship. So it would be a $40 investment. Let me know! Dave
gotmuddy
I recently got a Denali rod used off another forum. I used it this weekend as a jerkbait rod but it would be great as a small crankbait rod. I had zero problems throwing lc 80 jerkbaits and the rod feels like it weighs nothing. everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.
