flytyer57 Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 He's probably frusrated reading this exchange too. I know I'm getting frustrated reading this cuz it ain't going anywhere. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
troutfiend1985 Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 wait, some people are saying this is not a public forum, yet one of the reasons i've seen for threads being shut down is because this is a 'public forum' so which is it? I wandered in here on my own, registered without being invited, was granted access with no special procedure required beforehand. seems pretty public to me. a private forum would be one in which you could only be invited. I guess it's just what your definition of public is. What I was meaning is that this is a private forum in that it is operated by a private host. I understand your confusion, but the idea of a public forum would be more or less one operated by the government, in short and simple terms. Wishing to picket a local mall, private forum, being on the sidewalk picketing something would be a public forum. I guess in your post you're getting at the idea of the public being able to talk about things on this board, but what it boils down to is who operates the site, which would be Lilley. Small thing, wouldn't get worried about it but the point just comes down to the idea that Lilley can shut down a topic. Public forum in that anyone can view it, private forum in that it is owned and owperated by a private actor(really not that big of a deal and I should've put that out there earlier). “The greatest menace to freedom is an inert people” J. Tim Smith Posted March 10, 2011 Author Posted March 10, 2011 I know I'm getting frustrated reading this cuz it ain't going anywhere. Yeah. Al and the administrators had some great points that would make a big difference if they were followed. That would have been a good place to stop.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted March 10, 2011 Root Admin Posted March 10, 2011 And to be honest, acting like an adult goes both ways. If you're genuinely upset about someone's attitude or behavior, or feel like you're being unfairly attacked, address it directly- shoot 'em a PM, figure it out between the two of you, as opposed to the nebulous musings about the "general tone of the board," which seem to appear every few weeks. Work it out yourselves, I genuinely don't care for the drama. I like this statement. I've said this before. Actually some of the disagreement on this topic should be handled by PM's or does arguing in front of everyone give you position more importance? I don't know. Seems silly to argue in a room by yourselves I guess but in both cases, no one wins, no one gives ground, no one changes his mind or probably the mind of anyone else who's reading. I've also said those who disagree -all the time- need to go to the corner cafe, sit down and have a cup of coffee OR go fishing together.
Smalliebigs Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 I've also said those who disagree -all the time- need to go to the corner cafe, sit down and have a cup of coffee OR go fishing together. I totally agree with this one, Phil

bigredbirdfan Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Maybe the nice weather coming up will get people off these topics and out in the water and stop the grumpy agrumenative tone.

Al Agnew Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Geez, guys, can't believe we can argue like crazy about figuring out how to cut down on arguments! Having, as Tim said, some experience moderating on another site, I know it isn't easy. I think the most important thing is that the moderator has to be on the board about every day, and stay on top of things, or else the train wreck happens before the engineer gets the warning. Other than that, the most important thing is to be fair. Everybody here probably knows my views on a lot of political subjects, but nobody ever accused me of editing out the stuff I didn't agree with, and nobody has ever accused Phil of that, either. I think it's too bad that some threads have been closed rather than the offending posts being deleted, but that's by far the simplest way to do it. There will often be hard feelings if a post is whacked and the poster feels singled out. I would volunteer to do some of the moderating, since I AM on here most days, but that's entirely Phil's decision.
