Members T Hood Posted March 17, 2011 Members Posted March 17, 2011 Gentlemen: Has anyone fished the lake in Unger Park? Just discovered it. I've fished Simpson, Suson, and Tilles. Just looking for a good place to fish close to home. With the weather we're having I was expecting for activity. However, with the water up and looking like a bad cup of coffee, I'm fit to be tied as to where to have a productive day of fishing and what to throw. Any ideas are welcome. Regards,
Bill Jr. Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Better question is what type of fish? Cats, Bass, or something else. Probably still a week or 2 away from some better bass fishing with the snow and cold runoff but have you ever tried Mallard Lake? It's a hidden jewel if you wait a couple weeks and are willing to walk a little bit.

I am wanting to get my kids out and practice with their new fly rods. Would like to catch some small bluegill or sunfish. Something easy to keep them entertained while learning how to use the rods. Where is Mallard Lake?

Members T Hood Posted March 17, 2011 Author Members Posted March 17, 2011 I'm looking for bass, crappie, or anything that'll bite. I'd love to get down to the trout streams, but, that's a bit of a hike and getting more expensive thanks to the gas prices. Creve Coeur Lake is larger than Mallard. CCL gets quite a bit of activity from the rowing clubs (Wash U, SLU, etc). Mallard is just south of it along the running path. I have fished there and done well. But, as you say, it's going to be another couple of weeks before the water gets warm enough.
Gavin Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Used to fish down at Bee Tree Park allot as kid....its got a good population of carp...fun with a can of corn, but too murky to site fish for them.
jah Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Great topic as I was just thinking about posting this same question. I live right by Tilles Park in Brentwood. Think there are any trout left in there? I'd also LOVE to bank fish for crappie. Where is the best place? As far as your post for bluegill, I love Lake 27 at Busch wildlife for that. Every cast will get one for you. They are small, though.
stlfisher Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 I have not heard good things about Creve Coeur Lake for bass fishing. I am not sure about the other species. Forest Park and Carondelet are pretty good for bass and bluegill. There are nice bass in the Fountain Lakes off of 370, but they are a challenge. I spend most of my warm water fishing at Busch. It can be challenging, but there are some nice fish in those lakes.
David Unnerstall Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 One can catch a few 10-13" bass in Spanish Lake at times. There is a boat ramp there. North/Sunfish Lakes next to it held 18" bass legends says. But I have had no luck since they drew it down and you can't get a boat between the two.
