FishinCricket Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 http://www.oldtowncanoe.com/canoes/product_list.html In looking at the website the two seem very similar.. What are the differences? Do you own one? Have you floated both? Could you do me a small favor and tell me what you like or dislike before I consider dropping this kinda change? cricket.c21.com

I have had a Discovery 169 for 15 years now and it is a great canoe. It has been on the Buffalo a bunch, Mulberry at near flood stage etc and it works well. One day or 5 day trips. Two or three people and it is still able to handle these waters around here without any problems. Sorry I can't compare it to the other since this has been my only Old Town.

I'm told that the 169 is very stable.. Do you stand in it at all? Has it ever had a puncture or leak? I'm real worried about that, since I float the Niangua allot... cricket.c21.com
Members Doc Tom Posted March 29, 2011 Members Posted March 29, 2011 Never a puncture or a leak and it has been through a lot of rock gardens. Over 10 days on the Buffalo with boy scouts using it. I can stand in a pool on the river or in a pond ok.

I've been able to cast a fly rod while standing in it. Â Â

Al Agnew Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 The Penobscot 174 is a little narrower at the waterline and has a little sharper entry lines, so it will probably track better but maneuver less well than the Disco 169. The Disco will probably feel a little more stable. I suspect you'd like the Disco a little better. The 3 layer poly is much heavier than the Royalex Penobscots, which in my opinion are the sweetest tandem canoes available for the typical Ozark stream. But you won't want to stand up in a Penobscot routinely.

Have you floated both? Could you do me a small favor and tell me what you like or dislike before I consider dropping this kinda change? What up Cricket???? I have had 4 Old Towns and I sold two and still own a Pack Angler in camo, which I have only used 3 times so far but, I love it I also have a Predator SS150 in camo which is the vessle I use the most, I also have a nice galvanized trailer for it that make things easy.I guess you could say I have Old Towns from both sides of the weight spectrum, one of the heaviest canoes they make and one of the lightest they make. One weighs 118 pounds the other 33 pounds, the weight of my canoes are not an issue for me thus far in my life I can move and press both over my head. If you are going to purchase an Old Town let me know I will get you the cheapest price gauranteed. My cousin works for them and he can get you one shipped from a outfitter in Maine cheaper than you will find them around here. They put kevlar skid plates on them for you too, which in my opinion is a must ....just my opinion guys....I beat the piss out of my canoes. I just bought a Pack angler from them with two skid plates, one on the front and one on the back delivered for $695...you will not beat that price around here for that. So my ansewer to your poll is neither. The Old town Predator SS is the most stable canoe they make but, alot of guys will run and hide from the weight.....I like standing when I fish out of my canoe and I like being able to put trolling motors and 5hp Yammi's on the back of my canoe. Alot of guys will laugh and snicker when they see me in the smalliecraft but after years of trial and many errors they are the canoes I like good luck and you will enjoy either one of those canoes they will last you awhile that's for sure.
FishinCricket Posted March 29, 2011 Author Posted March 29, 2011 Thanks for the reply, SmallieBigs... Now what would you do if you only had a budget of x dollars and the two canoes listed in this comparison were readily available at around that price range...? :face_palm: cricket.c21.com

So (basically) if I can keep my butt in the seat and just float, the Penobscot is the better tandem ride and my wife would prolly enjoy it more... I'm guessing that, if I plan on doing mainly fishing floats and solo floats, I should go with the Disco...? Thanks Al. cricket.c21.com
