Members Fredrick Posted April 4, 2011 Members Posted April 4, 2011 I spin fish for trout using small jerk baits , rooster tails, and powerbait. Now when I fish I land alot of little ones and the occasional bigger one like 17 inches and up. Is their a way to target the larger ones of is it just a matter of whats around that day? jagermeister anyone?
FRENZEL Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 Larger jerkbaits. Even slug-gos or Flukes downstream of Fall Creek. I like it best during heavy generation but occasionally it is decent with none. Good Luck! TRACY FRENZEL FRENZELS GUIDE SERVICE 417-699-2277 "ONE MORE CAST"
twosets Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 I had good success last week fishing jigs in the restricted area. lots of 16 to 18 in fish. I had a larger fish on for quite a while close to the dam, but broke it off before i could get a good look. "This is not Nam. This is bowling. There are rules."
Members Fredrick Posted April 4, 2011 Author Members Posted April 4, 2011 3 hours after I made this post I landed(then released)a nice 17 inch or so rainbow on 2 lb mono(that was a blast). Now I want to learn how to use jigs. I have tried them a bunch of times but never caught a thing my method or color choice must be way off. With jigs are they better with the float or without. Was size and color fluke would be best. I should of posted this question along time ago I was worried people were just gonna tell me to get a fly rod. jagermeister anyone?
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted April 4, 2011 Root Admin Posted April 4, 2011 I have several articles on jig fishing on this site. Start there. I have an old video too. Need to do more. Planning on it this summer. Float or not to float- depends on conditions, not what's the best. Need to know how to do both.
hillbillyflyshack Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 Go to Lilley's and hire a guide. Best money you will ever spend 'cause your learning curve will increase dramatically.
Gavin Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 Big jerkbaits work for browns. Think bass sized models...Early & late best for browns because they are low light ambush predators......and its best to get there first or be there last. Rainbows arent great jerkbait fish...Jigs would probably be allot better for them...A boat would be a big help on Taney. Cheers.
FRENZEL Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 When you said big fish I just assumed big Browns.. Big rainbows I would definitely say JIG FISH. Although plenty fall to the flies. I think the largest rainbow I ever had hooked was on a zebra midge. TRACY FRENZEL FRENZELS GUIDE SERVICE 417-699-2277 "ONE MORE CAST"
laker67 Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 Big jerkbaits work for browns. In the mid to late 90's, I watched the same four guys from springfield hold court on catching big browns, after dark, on big jerkbaits. They would do it trip after trip. Made me want to trade the longrod for the spin rod. Then they just quit fishing, I haven't seen any of them in 10 years. I guess they just got bored. They would catch 6,7, and 8 pound fish almost every trip in the fall. That's good fish now, but it was "great" fish back then. Actually, they were not called jerkbaits back then, they were rapalas and rogues.
