No word back. They were just going to shoot an email to the agent who lives in Crane. I wish I could've know it might be otters. Feel kinda stupid if it is, but that was a a good deal of fish. Can otters carry lots of fish like that? It was maybe 30 or 40 fish. I don't know how many ponds there are around the lower wire road.

Maybe a few other anglers will see this thread and be able to distinguish next time something like this happens. I have been standing in the parking lot of the lower wire road stringing up my rod when a guy stopped on the bridge and dumped water/fish into the stream and drove off. That was way back in November. But I do know otters are not uncommon on Crane.

There's no reason otters would only target crappie, then drag them from whatever local pond they were found at and "stack" them by some other creek, immediately below an easily-accessible bridge. It's about as likely as a rogue penguin from the local zoo being the culprit :D

But some folks want otters to be the source of every major ill which has befallen the Ozarks since they've been introduced, so every possible scenario in which otters may have even remotely played any role is attributed wholly to the otters. It wouldn't surprise me at all if JD had a Glen Beck style blackboard in his garage, and stayed up nights figuring out how otters were connected to smallmouth disappearances, the past few years of poor turkey recruitment, the recent economic downturn and the Nazis :D

Well, I am a racist like the Nazi's, but still have a full head of hair, so you don't have to worry about that. I still try to figure out this Glen Beck guy you seem to associate me with, if I had the time, I would google it, but I figure it was some kind of insult. I have seen a pile of carcasses left by otters with my own eyes along a stream near the Mississippi River, but they were big head carp, so I was not really too worried about it.

That was funny... And accurate.

No venom meant by it JD, your premise just seemed a bit out there.

Otters could've done it, but there's no reason to believe they did.

Interesting, I saw the same thing - filleted crappie off a bridge on the upper Spavinaw in Benton County (another small wild trout stream). Probably just people cleaning or dumping their fish they caught in a lake somewhere else was what I figured.

Interesting, I have seen the same thing off a bridge on the upper Spavinaw in Benton County (another wild trout stream) but just assumed it was someone cleaning or dumping fish they caught elsewhere, however I suppose it could be a vast, otter based, global conspiracy backed by people in the highest levels of government.

I hunted mushrooms along a stream with otter sign today, but no piles of crappie. The MDC does not stock the lakes that come out of this stream with crappie. Just to piss me off, they stole all the mushrooms.

Kinda scares me to think we have Filet knife carrying otters...

A strike indicator is just a bobber...

Guy brings a mess of fish home...from wherever, cleans them, then pitches the guts over the nearest bridge...

1. Because he doesn't want to attract every possum and buzzard in the county to his back 40.

2. He thinks he is doing something decent by feeding the turtles and coons. Better than pitching them in a ditch along a county road. They'll be gone after the next rain.

He probably disposed of his deer carcass the same way, last November.

It will help spawn a new breed of gut feeders at crane. Naturally reproducing "gut feeders".
