In answer to whats wrong with high water. Nothing if it is controlled & not allowed to do what just happened. If the water is allowed to rise above & into sewer systems as it did in Taney County the following occurs. Grinder pump wells become covered with ( lake / flood ) water, the grinder pump wells fill with water, the pumps turn on & run constantly which they are not designed to do. Most pumps eventually Fail & or short out due to the level of the water in the well & stop running which allows all waste water to flow into the lake. But, before that happens if enough of them are under water & running constantly they overload the pumping station & the pumping station can't keep up. But we were lucky enough that they let the water go high enough that both took place ( not to mention that they let the level go high enough to flood out some of the pumping stations ) which means, flush the toilet & raw sewage runs into the lake, wash clothes & waste water runs into the lake, wash dishes & waste water runs into the lake, take a shower & waste water runs into the lake. Any water used that would normally go into & run through the sewer system is dumped into the lake. This does not take into consideration the septic system fields that then dump directly into the lake & septic tanks that flood out & back up into the lake. Oh yeah I almost forgot the little known & or talked about septic ponds that flood out into the lake. So, whats wrong with high water ??????? As I said nothing if you control it, they did not, & the end result is the mess that we are left to deal with. Oh I almost forgot, that's a government run organization that failed to control the situation & created the mess, I guess they will be coming around to help us clean it up, they just have been to busy to let us know.

ah yes, i forgot, the govt failed to control a freak storm system that dumped massive amounts of rain along the MO/AR border the upper Mississippi and the Ohio rivers. The corps is about flood control, and white river is being managed right now. They are managing not to really dump even more water into a system that is totally and beyond saturated. As much as it pains a lot of us the white river system of hydro power and lakes werent created for recreation and we are caught up in flood management conundrum.

The key words: FLOOD CONTROL. I am impressed, they did so well & controlled it so well that they allowed it to rise 2&1/4 feet higher than the record set in 2008 & be even more devastating than 2008. No one was predicting rain well prior to it's arrival were they, only every TV sation, RADIO station, & internet weather web-site. Whoever said they are now reacting & attempting to control a situation is correct. Rather than learning from 2008 & being pro-active & " CONTROLLING THE CONTROLLABLES " as any one with common sense would of done. I forgot, those highly educated, degree carrying folks don't need any of that there common sense.

Good points have been made about not being able to release water from TR because there is nowhere to put it downstream... touche. This makes good sense. I guess dealing with a disaster like this is just a tough job... no matter how you look at it.

So it appears to me that every time a weather forcaster predicts rain fall we should just on a whim lower Table Rock to say 893' so as to prevent a FLOOD. Then when docks are on the ground and boats cannot find a ramp that is useable then everyone would feel the Corps Did the right thing. I am sorry for the sarcasim but, when Mr Lilley gets on this forum and says they did the best they could considering the situation, and might I remind everyone his property is underwater, I think we should have considered the other options like people who are dealing with complete towns in ruin and underwater. I am Sorry Nitroman is having issues with the job the Corps did. I am also extremly sympathetic to Mr Lilley and other along taneycomo on the fact that I know what it feels like to have to clean water form everything you own, It makes you sick. I do believe that the intentions of the Corps is to keep every business and home along the White River basin safe and dry, but man cannot control the weather, and neither can the Corps, all we can do is deal with what comes. Just the opinion of someone who has had to deal with flood waters before. TR

Dang I was all set to come on and defent the COE a little bit but its already been done. I will say from having seen more than a few lake level forecasts there are a LOT of variables that go into the forecast and the decisions to release, generate etc. There are best case, worst case and "historical averages" on rainfall that go into it, there is down stream conditions all the way to the gulf right now, there are considerations for reguirement of electricity generation there are other lakes all the way up to Gavins Point that are at record pool and are releasing heavily into the Missouri which of course empties into the Mississippi and then the Ohio, white river etc. etc. The lake was built to control a flood all else is secondary. The fact that it backs up into yards etc. is unfortunate but I believe that Table Rock has the right (flowage easement) to put water up to the 936.0 level(not 100% sure on that level, but it is close). There is always going to be a record level, could be this year, could be 10 years ago. And yes there were rainfall predictions even up to 10 inches I heard prior to the "EVENT" but there is a huge amount of difference between 10 and 20 inches of rainfall. I haven't checked Bull Shoals level lately but they will hold as much as possible to avoid making the situation on the lower Mississippi worse, and it backs up the line. What will happen if we get another 15" rain event, then all bets are off, the safety of the dam will come first, dumping a sustained 5 feet of water into branson homes is MUCH better than a wall of water 100 feet high removing the town from the map. Water backing up into lift stations is a fact, happens many places that are not on a lake also, lagoons overflow, septic fields run, non point pollution from fertilizer, chicken farms, cattle in pasture all run downhill. Lilley you have my sympathies and I know you are in touch with the COE folks often, I am sure they appreciate your support.
