Smallmouth bass will be released in the Black River, Castor River, Courtois Creek, Current River and the North Fork of the White River during the spring season over the next two years.

Looking in otter poop might be a good way to make some money for some of those tags. There's lots of otters over in those rivers.

If we could only train the otters to leave the smallies alone and have them feed on Silver carp instead.

They do. But not enough. I run across a pond that I duck hunt along the Mississippi that floods when the river is up last winter and the otters had left carcasses and scales of the asian carp all over.

Some of the streams they tagged will probably see increased pressure this summer since they put a bounty on the smallies. I doubt if it will help the populations this year.

More pressure on the Castor maybe...but I doubt it. Most would be put off with the Castor because there isnt much shade and its often a long hike & drive to find fish. Plus the St. Francis & Big offer better fishing.

The Courtois, Current, Black, and North Fork see plenty of pressure so I'd take it as positive sign and hope for future management changes on the sections they are tagging. Cheers.

Not much attention is given to upper North Fork as far Smallies go - I'm glad to see ANY attention payed to it by the MDC.

I took my 4yr old on his first fishing trip yesterday and we caught one tagged fish but it was the right one $75. Seen 8 or so others with tags. The only problem is getting the tag out you have to do a quick snip with a sharp pair of cutters and sometimes when u catch one by the time you get the tag secured the other fish in that hole knows your presence. Also, I thought that where it read reward $75 meant that the tag should be worth a small amount under $75. Years ago on the Jacks fork I caught only $5 and $10 FISH SO I guess with inflation the price of a reward tag went up too. All in all not a bad 2 hr outing.

It's nice to see MDC getting involved in some of my local waters. I definitely cant wait to go fish the Current and Curtois for some of these tagged smallies.
