Al Agnew Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 As for how to adjust the reel, I'd say CWF's thumb has at least four years of college. In that case, what I'd do is first adjust the spool tension knob by loosening it until the spool wobbles when you move your thumb on it sideways, then tightening it just to the point where it stops wobbling. Then try it with all brakes off. If it seems too sensitive (in other words, if you get a bird's nest on your first moderate cast), turn two opposite brakes on, and repeat until you are feeling comfortable with your casting. Some people adjust based upon the weight of the lures they are using, but I don't...I keep everything pretty loose so that I can cast the lightest lures I use, figuring that I can control the heavier ones with my thumb. Now if your thumb is NOT well educated, start from the opposite direction. Put on a fairly heavy practice plug, about as heavy as the usual lures you will be using. Hit free spool button with your thumb off the spool, and adjust spool tension knob until the lure just barely drops off the rod tip by its own weight. Then start casting with all brakes engaged, and if you are doing okay, take off two brakes and try again. Stop when you start having big problems and go back to the last adjustment. Either way, once you get it adjusted as well that way as possible, you might play around a little with the spool tension knob, tightening it and turning off a couple of brakes, then loosening it and turning brakes back on. You might be able to tweak things a bit better doing that.
Mitch f Posted June 18, 2011 Author Posted June 18, 2011 I'm an eclectic imbiber. And I haven't really been able to drink tequila since I got really, really sick on it during my college years. Of course, it may have been the gin I drank when the tequila ran out, but the tequila is what stuck in my mind because of the quantity I drank. I'm a Costco member myself, and I did the Mexican Beer thing too. They have really good meat at Costco too! They recently started offering prime beef in addition to the choice meat they currently offer. They have excellent king crab legs too......Love that place. As far as beer goes, I'm one of those guys that like bud light and Corona, which would be considered grade B beer. I'm more of a light beer fan, less after taste, hate the beer after taste. Can't stand scotch, more of a bourbon guy. But you need to have a good wine that has breathed for a while and you might change your mind! "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
flytyer57 Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 But you need to have a good wine that has breathed for a while and you might change your mind! Like that $3 a gallon White Port. Just takes a little getting used to. But it will get you quite drunk. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.

flytyer57 Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 Man, I love alcoholics! Y'all can prattle on forever about your favo-rite booze, can'tcha? :sigh: Not really. Gotta talk about fishing once in a while. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
Mitch f Posted June 20, 2011 Author Posted June 20, 2011 Some people are showing up Thursday, some on Friday, some on Saturday. I don't know if you guys have already contacted Larry at Boiling Springs or not or do you want me to do it for you. Let me know. I probably won't show up until Friday afternoon when the Friday float is near ending. BTW, a know a couple of guys that tore em up on the upper float putting in at Riddle Bridge access last week!!! So let's have a barbque on Friday night and then float again Saturday. I'm sure some will stay and float Sunday as well. Since I don't have any camping equipment I was wondering if I could share a tent on Fri and Saturday?? Here's a prelim agenda for Saturday night: 6:00 to 7:00 Supper 7:00 to 7:15 Change from beer to cocktails 7:15 to 8:00 Tally fish and award ceremony 8:00 to 9:00 Feats of Strength (JoeD, Coldwater) 9:00 to 10:00 Airing of Grievances (Cricket) 10:00 to 10:15 Get more gasoline and logs for the fire 10:15 to ? Free time "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
eric1978 Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 LMAO Mitch at your agenda. Classic. Uh oh, Mitch wants to share a tent...
ColdWaterFshr Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Paul Dallas is in - but probably only for Thursday afternoon to Saturday morning. Floated Saturday from Lazy Days to Devils Elbow and got blanked, yes blanked. Might've had something to do with the 4 little crumb-snatchers I was towing in the inner-tube behind me. They were throwing rocks, and swimming and disturbing the peace. Saturday night camping at Lazy Days didn't get much better. It stormed for 6 hours straight - from about 11 pm to 5 a.m.. Never seen anything like it.
joeD Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 I am sorry to say that my attendance at the inaugural OAF Float N Boat is in grave danger ( "Is there any other kind?" - Col. Nathan Jessup ). A relative's retirement party and my son's re-scheduled knee surgery (LAX injury) have conspired against me in a perfect storm of obstacles to thwart my fishing plans. Also, and a kick in the teeth, my van was vandalized yesterday at the Delcour slab "parking" area (on the upper Meramec) while two friends and my friend's son and I floated (from Short Bend). My passenger window was smashed, my wallet and cell phone taken, my friends two cell phones taken (work phones, he owns his business), overnight bags with clothes, etc. Generally, an unpleasant way to end a trip. I can't say Mrs. joeD is very happy with me and my choice of fishing locations either. Regardless, my status as an attendee is now a "probably not."
