Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted June 16, 2011 Root Admin Posted June 16, 2011 I've gotten several PM's and email saying visitor's AVS programs are saying there is a virus on ozarkanglers. After I got a comment last week, I sent a trouble ticket to my support team and they ran a complete check on the whole site and came up with nothing. The site is clear of any viruses. I'm not sure what's going on... not sure if the AVS programs are too sensitive or what. Anyone have any thoughts?

The question to your support team is what is the date of their last virus scan update. If it is more than a week old it should be updated and rescaned.
flytyer57 Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 Just a reminder to everyone to keep their AVS up to date. I have never had a problem with any viruses on OAF. I'm sure some avs could find a virus within itself if not set right. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.

Most new combo packages will warn if a site tries to set ad or tracking cookies as it sees them as possible malware or self loading viruses if they have protection turned all of the way up. I use Avast and have not seen any alerts, and it finds things in the temp folder from time to time on certain other trusted sites. No mention up to then so I thought may be something was wrong. So I wanted to mention it and see if anyone else had a problem.

If users start seeing some thing happen to their PC, you can go back to that date and find out what change was made. I the I/T world, this is called "Change Management". We have to keep accurate records of everything that is changed in our production enviroments/networks. Just in some thing goes wrong, we know who to blame. Later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!

The cookies used by OAF are not used for tracking, but to identify users on this site. I never have clicked on the banner ads so I wouldn't know about the cookies you get from those sites. Although that latest banner ad from Can Am is really annoying as it takes up so much space for the first 5-10 seconds. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.

Although that latest banner ad from Can Am is really annoying as it takes up so much space for the first 5-10 seconds. The OAF cookie contains login info that could be hacked by someone else, so a Security Software may see that as divulging personal info and throw a report. The ads flashing on the website are enough to launch a cookie or malware program since they are bits of computer code that Phil allows to run on his web. You don't have to click thru them for them to track you. I use Firefox with Flashblock and ad block, the ads are still there as a small banner, but they don't flash and grow larger. Clear out your cookies and restart your browser, then surf OAF for an hour and look at your cookie folder to see what it leaves.
