North Fork River Stripers

Recommended Posts

My wife, son and Brandon (one of my employees) hit the drift boat this evening in search of the elusive North Fork Striper. We got one down about a mile above james on a crawdad, thought we could really tear them up but couldn't find them again after boating the first one. 32 + inches, 11 1/2 pounds and soaking in salt water.

Nice! What's the recipe?

Dead drifting live bait? How would you classify the population now. Heavy, moderate, a few or very few?

Has anyone thrown hard baits successfully?

Wayne, the dam at dawt is under water allowing an unknown amount of stripers, white, hybreds to move upstream to the cooler water.

SWAG, hardbaits would work. I'd fish something that would appeal to whites, LMB, smallies, and spots. Any true stripers that piled on would just be a bonus. Pointer 78 or a Super Spook Jr wouldn't be bad choices.

So they are still coming up the river? Sounds like a winner to me.

I may rethink my flyrod situation and go with a Falcon/Curado and a box of X Raps.

Fly fishermen have been catching them so I would say each deeper hole has a school of 6-10 fish. I think this fish would have taken the first thing that hit near it, but the catching spooked the school and put them down. If we had been ready and thrown to the freshly caught fish I think we could have doubled up.
