First time fishing the Niangua. Fishing was a bit inconsistent. Caught 5 trout (1 brown) in the first 30 minutes all between 10-12 inches. Then it would be real spotty the rest of the day with fish coming in bunches of two to three at a time then nothing. Probably caught around 20 total with all smallmouth after the first hour. My new kayak and the additions I made all worked perfectly. I was extremely pleased and won't be adjusting anything. I actually caught a majority of the fish while in the yak and not wading. Sorry no pics. My digital camera crapped out on my yesterday. Maybe an excuse to buy a waterproof one.

Also, fished Lake of the Ozarks in the kayak on the Little Niangua (about 1 mile upstream from Big Island). Fishing was DEAD from 1-3. Went back out at 6:00 and killed the bass until dark. Caught 6 keepers with the largest over 4 lbs. All others were over 12 inches.

...all fish were released as always.

We did that same float last Monday with similiar results, except we only fished for trout. Did manage a few smallmouth. Seems the trout fishing this time of year slows considerably after a mile or so. Also, LOTS of traffic.

A strike indicator is just a bobber...

Were you flyrodding on LOZ?

Nope. Caught those fish mostly on 7" plastic worms.

and to your comment Dennis, yes there was lots of traffic. One particularly obnoxious woman on a kayak yelled at my friend and myself twice saying "this river isn't for fishing" and that we were in the way. I just ignored her the first time. The second time I was losing patience and asked if rivers were just for floating drunk and being rude to patient fisherman. She tried to stop and continue the "conversation" but couldn't control her kayak which hit a rock near shore causing her to drop her paddle. By the time she picked it back up she was far downstream, and we didn't see her again.

Yeah I would have some news for her, many of us were fishing the river long before her brand of trash showed up.

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
