bobw Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 I think I have seen some pictures from a down miaging locator. I am thinking about putting one on my boat. What do you all think is the best? The Humminbird looks pretty good. Good custome reviews. Best to put it on the trolling motoe or off the back? Let me know, I sure think one would be handy.
Guest Posted September 24, 2011 Posted September 24, 2011 Ive got a HB 788cu HD DI combo http://store.humminbird.com/products/410760/788ci_HD_DI_Combo Its cool when schooling fish go back down, swimming thru the transducer beam. Its mounted on the back of the boat for now, until I can afford another on the front. Network em, together. If you like good electronics, down imaging is pretty neat.
grizwilson Posted September 24, 2011 Posted September 24, 2011 The new electronics are something, they can find crappie like noting I have ever seen. But to me they are terriblely expensive. That said last spring I broke down and bought a HB 798SI, it works wonderful but felt my wallet had be violated. The pain did not last long as it worked so well I added a 1197SI in July. Too darn much money but who can place the true value on 15 crappie, I mean shoot that is 30 fillets. check out Bass boat central they have huge discussions on the electronics. I think Lowrance has their problems corrected and have a better picture but the humminbird is simpler to operate for me and I need simple. http://www.bbcboards.net/ g “If a cluttered desk is a sign, of a cluttered mind, of what then, is an empty desk a sign?”- Albert Einstein
bobw Posted September 24, 2011 Author Posted September 24, 2011 Well I just ordered a Humminbird 596HDDI. It had really good reviews, yes, kind of expensive, but Table Rock has changed so much over the past few years. You really need to find and see what the fish are holding on. It's been 15 years since I have had a boat, bought a really nice 83 Ranger 335 with an 84 Merc 150 on it. It had a garman 160 on the front and a Lawrance X75 on the consloe, but I wanted something so I could see what was on the bottom. I know the X75 is a good locator, but it still takes some inturpation, amd I think I will leave it on also, or move it to the front. But I really think the 596 will be a good unit. Can't wait to get it on and try it out.
bobw Posted September 29, 2011 Author Posted September 29, 2011 Got the Humminbird in yesterday. Got it mounted on the dash last night. Need to mount the transducer tonight. Can't wait to try it out. If it lives up to it billing it should be a fantastic unit.
gotmuddy Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 I want one for my riverboat, there's no telling what's sitting on the bottom of some of these rivers. everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.
Mitch f Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 I want one for my riverboat, there's no telling what's sitting on the bottom of some of these rivers. I think the lack of depth would hinder you for a river boat. Unless you're fishing really deep rivers, the cone angle would only show a spot size of much less than 10 ft in dia. You can "trick" the sensor by adjusting the angle slightly forward to project a elliptical shape which can increase your spot size but cut down on the resolution and depth reading ability. I have a portable I tried to take on the river with very limited success. "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
bobw Posted September 30, 2011 Author Posted September 30, 2011 I got to try it out for a couple of hours yesterday. Went to Cape Fair and put in, WOW, what a cool locator. Reminds me of the old paper graph we used to use. The detail is great. I only have one problem. The way I mouinted the transducer, it throws a spray of water about 6' high when I'm running. Going to have to figure out a better place to mount it. The transducers for those are longer than normal. But once I get that corrected it will be great.
bobw Posted September 30, 2011 Author Posted September 30, 2011 I have been on line looking at some of the other posts people have about the spray from the Humminbird transducers. Looks like it is a common problem and not easily corrected unless you can mount it in the hull. Has anyone else expirenced this issue with this problem. I thought I had the transducer mounted wrong, but it sounds like ther is no way to eliminate this with out some type of spray guard. The other thing I'm not sure about is it affecting the lift of my boat. I have a 84 Ranger 335V with a 150 Mercury on it, th eboat runs and lifts well, but it did seem to affect that when I was running yesterday. But with all the spray coming from the transducer it was hard to tell much about it. Let me know if there is a cure other than in the hull mounting. Thanks.

Is that too shallow? everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.
