BrianS Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 How the heck do you catch 5 fish on the rock? I am struggling very bad and have a 2 day tournament this weekend. Fished today under cloudy/windy conditions and still only 3 keepers. Jeez this isnt looking good at all. HOOK 'EM HORNS
bluebasser86 Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 By the way it's been sounding with guides even having a hard time catching any fish, let alone keepers, you might be doing the right thing if you're catching 3 keepers a day.

Members Lunker Lane Posted October 19, 2011 Members Posted October 19, 2011 It could be much better by Saturday. Good Luck!
abkeenan Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 Maybe try Roland Martins "Helicopter Lure". Probably the only lure these fish havent seen.
magicwormman Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 The Rock is as tough as I've seen it in forty years. Even after the fish kill of "99", I could catch a few kentucks and brown bass. We've had one legal LM in our last three trips out on the James near pt 13 area. That fish was caught on a redfin at first light. Three good keepers might win the derby if things don't pick up by Sat. Good Luck!!!

Members RoundBoyYamhy Posted October 19, 2011 Members Posted October 19, 2011 I know that fishing during the day has been tough for most. I have been out multiple times in the past couple of weeks and finding quite a few fish. Wont help much with the tournament anglers, cause i have been going from 5pm-11pm. the fishing has not been "hot and heavy" by any means, but i have found at least five keepers each time. Darker, shad colored spinnerbaits have been working until it gets "dark, dark" then i have been experimenting with different colored single spins: red, red-black, black, black-purple, etc. The fish are not usuallly tearing the rod out of my hand, but you can feel the bites well. Good luck!
BrianS Posted October 19, 2011 Author Posted October 19, 2011 I had 3 or 4 bites yesterday on the blade but nothing there when I pulled. Tomorrow or Friday I guess I'll join the kazillion people up there in the James River. The lower end is like whipping a dead horse or at least for me it is. HOOK 'EM HORNS
Sore Thumbs Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 I have been fishing Beaver a lot lately and it is the same way. The fish are getting bigger as the temprature has gotten colder. The only way I have caught fish has been to cover a lot of water. If and when I catch them It will be one fish per spot. I went yesterday afternoon. I caught a good one on a Wiggle Wart and lost a good one with a LC 1.5 Chartruese/Black back. My best one was around 3lbs and I caught It in a big pile of trees flippin a speed craw.
