Online, I trade with Tackle Warehouse, Janns Netcraft, and LandBigFish as well as Cabelas. When I get an urge for a real fishing store I drop by Hook, Line, and Sinker in Rogers. They are way too tournament oriented for me, but they do try to carry the good stuff.

Oh sure change the subject and beat up on all the tourney guys. Can't you just keep with what we are talking about. I mean jeeze, don't take is so personal and turn another great thread into lake vs. river or pro vs. wannabe, that just irks me....woops....this is not that thread is it. Sorry. :yaeh-am-not-durnk:

That Hook, Line and Sinker, isn't that right next to the RR tracks?? I remember seeing that when I ran that line. Never did get a chance to stop in. Pretty good place huh???

If it is soft plastics or crankbait or spinner parts, its Barlow's for me. http://barlowstackle.com/ Take a look around. I think you will really like it. You can't beat some of those prices.

I like your comments. Unfortunately, some others can't take a joke.

Right by the tracks, yes. If you have to have a Purple Tiger Sponge Bob Wake Bait because so and so fishes it, that is the most likely place to find it. Shimano, Falcon, Daiwa, etc. gear. Quality line selections. That kind of place.

BPS has been out of the fishing business for several years. It's just a tourist attraction now, Johnny Morris is the ultimate sell out.

Yep I couldn’t agree more. BPS is the Wal-Mart of fishing, help is nonexistent, knowledge is nowhere to be found and I haven’t set foot in the place for years. Cabalas are a little better, you can find knowledgeable help but the mass in your face marketing is off putting. In recent years I have seen the light; I try to avoid all retail outlets trying to sell me crap I don’t want. I’d rather spend my money on gas and my time on the river even if my equipment suffers a bit.

I'm sure Johnny Morris is just following where the money is, hard to say he doesn't know what he's doing. All the more reason to hit the small mom and pop fly shops and bait and tackle shops where you may spend a little more, but you get personal service. You may even save money because you don't have all those impulse purchases at the smaller shops (do you think walking through all that other merchandise to get to the fishing stuff makes them money, you bet it does!)

BPS people are like wal-mart people, low paid. You dont get enthusiasts for the most part when you pay $8-$9 an hour.

everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.

When I was in St. Louis recently, I went to the Cabela's there. What a difference. They had a very nice fly selection and the prices were reasonable. I think BPS is way overpriced for most of what I want. I go there less and less.

I'm more inclined to hit River Run Outfitters when I'm at Taneycomo or Tim's when I head to Roaring River. I don't have a preference when I'm in Lebanon other than to say Reading's scares me :secret-laugh: .

More and more, I stick to online retailers that I've seen recommendations for on the board if it's stuff I don't need right this minute.

Hell, even BPS boat section is awful.

I really like Skip's Originals Toobies tubing/steel shot sinking rig. BPS carried it only or a short period of time and then quit, which disappointed me, then one fall day I pop into Readings on my way to Bennett and found out he still carried them (had to blow the dust off of them first though), the man is a wealth of information and stories, what I hoped to be a 3 minute in and out turned out to be more like 45

BPS has never been a first choice for me, but after my last few experiences with BPS gear that falls apart before it's even been wet, I've sworn them off. There's a difference between price and value, and the folks at BPS either don't get that or are banking on folks returning every couple months to replace their broken gear.

A gentleman working at Dick's in KC told me that if the store sign has 'Sporting Goods' consider going somewhere else for anything fishing. Sporting Goods stores are all about clothes these days. This guy has been working 30+ years with all the previous stores that eventually became Dick's and has seen fishing merchandise slowly decline over the years. Sports Authority ditched most every piece of fishing gear at our stores here this past year as well. Not that Sports Authority has been much of a player recently but at one time they offered a pretty good selection. Cabelas and BPS have cut back on store stock and what you need they never have anymore. Both pushing the online business. Walmart just sucks. IMO we can thank corporate greed along with a rotten economy now for killing the real sporting goods industry! In the St Louis area years ago we once had Grandpa Pidgeons and Central Hardware that had it all. Both are long gone.

It's simply supply and demand, capitalism not corporate greed (No one makes us go to Wal-Mart). Somehow Grandpa Pidgeons and Central Hardware didn't have what people wanted so they started going elsewhere. Unfortunately the buying power of these big stores is much better than the smaller ones so price is better and price is what keeps people out of the local shops and in to the bigger ones, or to the online stores that don't have the overhead of a brick and mortar store. We all bitch about the big box stores (but we all go there from time to time) and I bet many of us buy things online, it is up to us to support the smaller local businesses and spend an extra 50 cents on a fly or lure or we will continue to see fewer and fewer shops that actually care about the customer.
