Al Agnew Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 We had a thread a while back about catching two fish at once, which I've done a bunch of times. But today was different. I really thought today would be a great fishing day. Warm weather the last few days with a bit of rain, and it's deer season, which has been good to me for big fish throughout the years. So I was on the Meramec. But fishing was slow. I was catching a few, but nearly all of them small, and there was no rhyme or reason to where they were located or what they were hitting. I was using a Normal Middle N in a rocky pool when I got a strike. Set the hooks. I could tell it was a small fish, but suddenly it got a lot heavier, without actually pulling any harder. I reeled it in... I had a red-eared slider (an aquatic turtle) about 6 inches across the shell, hooked in the foot, and a 6 inch goggle-eye hooked on the other hook! Not bad to catch two different orders of critters at once. Never did figure out the fish. Ended up lucking into one 17 inch smallie and another about 15 inches. Everything else I caught was 12 inches or less. Oh well, it was a quiet, mostly cloudy, comfortable day and there were a LOT of eagles on the river.

Good lord, how am I going to spend the weekend in a tree stand when the bass are biting? exiledguide Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Thats the first time I've ever heard of catching two different species on a lure. I know Norman makes great lures but thats a first. You need to do a painting....
Mitch f Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 That's about as strange as you can get...Those red eared turtles seem to never get to much bigger than the one you hooked in the foot. It seems like I don't see those as often as I used to. "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
hank franklin Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 Al, what section of the Meramec were you on? Upper middle or lower? I was thinking about hitting it Friday, not sure exactly where.
Al Agnew Posted November 17, 2011 Author Posted November 17, 2011 I was above Onondaga. Mitch, I didn't try topwater, but I gave my homemade Subwalk a good workout without a sniff. Guess it was partly the stretch of river. Water temps were around 55-56 degrees all day. Had they been a few degrees warmer I'd have certainly fished topwater. The fish I did catch were all in moving water, but some were in fairly fast water, some in slower moving water, some in fairly shallow water, some in deeper water. I caught a few fish on crankbaits, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, Senkos, and hair jigs...and not many on any of them.
joeD Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 Mitch- Tell your friends to take pictures. Two of your SMA buddies caught personal bests recently. No pictures? In this day and age? Personal bests no less. Another friend tore them up walking the dog. No pictures? I don't get it. Fly fishermen will give us a thousand words on their trips, complete with scenery tableau and pictures of 8 inch fish. Why don't bass fishermen do the same?
rainbow Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 Couple of years ago I was on the Fall Creek dock fishing of the downstream end. There were several people there and the guy next to me and i both caught the same fish in the mouth at the same time on power bait.

Because Bass Fishermen are not Gay.........
