Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted November 18, 2011 Root Admin Posted November 18, 2011 Someone asked how long it took a brown to reach 20 inches. Here's what I got from Shane: Age Length 2 10.4 2.5 12.4 3.5 15.6 4.5 17.4 5.5 18.3 I would have to suspect that growth rates are higher now with the densities of brown trout lower than normal, but on average I would say it takes at least 6 years for a brown to get to 20 inches.
laker67 Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 I am surprised at those numbers. So basically, the stockers of 14 inches are around 3 years old. I would have guessed higher growth rates. Thanks for posting that info.
Andrew324 Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 So I caught a 30" brown in August while night fishing, does this mean the fish is close to 10 years old? I read in a Robert Behnke book that salmonae never actually stop growing, they grow until they die. Andrew Nelson Outdoor Adventures Graduate Assistant Campus Recreation Missouri State University

He stopped growing that very day.
hillbillyflyshack Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 I caught a female fish back in January that was 33 inches long. I don't know how old she was but she is still growing....I released her!
snagged in outlet 3 Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 I haven't broken the 30 inch mark, YET. I've flirted with it, but ....... 30 is the king kong mark in my book and the guys who have sealed that deal should be proud. Pete

A nice fish as well. I was told by the hatchery personel, that they started a rotating fin clipping a few years back. Do you recall seeing any clipped fins and where? You could contact soh for an age.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted November 20, 2011 Author Root Admin Posted November 20, 2011 The info given was from data collected from 1993-1995. Don't know about any other clip study doing on. Does seem like they've done some since but not sure.
