Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted November 30, 2011 Root Admin Posted November 30, 2011 Was lying in bed thinking about this last night. Even if MDC did stock Crane at some point, they're not going to admit it. I'm not saying that did or didn't. I honestly don't think we could ever say for sure unless you'd have several former workers come forward and verify that they did, not just one lone worker or a handful of stories. I think everyone would like to think that they didn't and that the rainbows in Crane are the pure strain but bottom line it's a nice fishery and we're blessed to have it in Missouri.

Indeed, some things are better kept a mystery and something for us to speculate on.
timsfly Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 You are right Phil, there are lots of stories about stockings and you guys know there was a hatchery on a small creek that runs into crane, good chance those mixed, but the are a self sustaining stock of rainbows, I doubt they are a 100% pure Mcloud river rainbows anymore, but they are a bit of fun now and again, and they do fight every bit as hard as any wild trout I've caught out west. So you are right Phil, we should just be thankful we have these trout on Crane and Mill creek and leave it at that, the conservation dept isn't going to admit to anything I've had lots of stories told to me from employees of the conservation dept about taking trout out to mix the eggs and the milt with the hatchery trout to make them better, and that was 30 years ago, no telling what they have done over the years, but I'm sure they are always trying to make the hatcherys better, and wild stock might help from time to time, go fishing and get off the computers for awhile, as for me I'm heading to crane right now and see if I can catch one or two of those feral trout. Gavin Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 This is worth a read...missed the program, but the author spoke to Ozark Fly Fishers in St. Louis a couple months ago. An Entirely Sythetic Fish
ozark trout fisher Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 Who really cares what strain of trout they are? The wild rainbows in the Blue Ribbon section of Little Piney for example are descended from hatchery raised trout that the MDC only stopped dumping in that stretch of creek about 10 years ago...Same with Mill, Spring, Blue Spring, and just about every other wild trout stream in the state, except the stockings in those creeks stopped anywhere from a few years to a half a century further back. And yet the trout in these streams act as wild and fight as hard for their size as any wild trout I've caught in Colorado in Montana. Except in true wilderness streams, I'm afraid that "pure strain" trout of any sort are pretty much a thing of the past, so personally I think I'll be satisfied with any kind of self-sustaining trout population.

I don't understand where this is coming from???? Has the MDC ever denied this?? Just asking... Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted November 30, 2011 Root Admin Posted November 30, 2011 Everyone I've asked so far associated with MDC trout hatcheries has said the only stocking took place about 100 years ago. By Neosho. So yes- they have denied stocking any rainbows since- people I've talked to. But I haven't talked to everyone... but again, if that's MDC official stance, then no one is going to state otherwise I wouldn't think.
drew03cmc Posted December 1, 2011 Author Posted December 1, 2011 OB, Phil, Chief and others, I will state this again, even if they aren't pure McClouds, which we are in agreement that they are most likely not, they are a beautiful fish who live in a beautiful place and are fun to catch. We are well aware that MDC's hatchery rainbows can spawn successfully in Missouri spring creeks, and none of the other Blue Ribbon streams are touted as having one of the last populations of McClouds in the world, so that is why the strain of rainbow would be interesting to know. It is not important, but I am still curious about it. Andy
