Guest Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 Hoglaw and myself combined for 17lbs of smallmouth yesterday. I caught my personal best smallmouth(3 of them) on a custom painted wiggle wart. They were caught on consecutive casts on an obscure mainlake bank, windy chunk rock.. We used the old wart and the new "original". I really don't think it matters, however location and timing were key ingredients. Also, the color pattern was a special color I painted up last week. (pumpkin pie) Thank goodness for good hooks, gamma fishing line, and a limber rod. Otherwise, they would have broken off at the boat. Those smallies tried to rip the rod out of my hands. I would reel the bait down to its diving depth and they nailed it, about 5 turns of the handle. At first, I thought it was a big ole catfish or drum. Then it jumped going away from the boat. It was like hooking a pickup truck headed down hill. I've never had so much fun catching smallmouth! I will get the pics of the fish posted up tonight...

Mitch f Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 Awesome, just awesome!!!! beautiful fish. I wouldn't tell anyone where that chunk rock pile is located. Ha ha Wind is a great thing to catch the big uns. Wiggle Warts have always been my favorite crank bait. "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
Buzz Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 Great catch. I like the colors of those cranks too. If fishing was easy it would be called catching.

I love the way those small jaws "truck" when they hammer the crankbait. Its obvious why these tactics yield big rewards. The fish were active for an hour during a 6hr span.
exiledguide Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 WOW Shazam ain't nothing like smallmouth on crankbaits. I like the referance to hooking a pickup truck going down hill.
