duckydoty Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 Got the girls out on Table Rock this morning for some duck hunting. Forecast was for winds out of the southwest at 5 miles per hour and bluebird skies. I knew the perfect spot to have the sun to our backs and pocket water out front. Put out about 4 dozen deeks and wedged the boat blind up under a willow tree. About 10 minutes after shooting time a group of 8 golden eyes came right into the deeks. We gave Delani, my wife's daughter 1st shot. She missed and I tried to play clean up but struck out also. We did not even get the guns all the way loaded and more golden eye were coming in. Swing and a miss by all again. 15 minutes later and a single greenhead came in on my side and I dropped him. Next thing we knew, a group of 25 mallards were locked up out front and coming in hard. The words "Take Em" were uttered and after all the powder in all the guns was fired 2 more green heads were laying on the water. Delani had just bagged her 1st ever green head. 2 more golden eye came in and MonaChari took one and I took the other. Right after that another mallard came by and dropped out of the sky. Saw several more birds today making a couple of high passes each time but I think the sun got a little bright and made us stand out. Not a bad day for hunting on the Rock. Sounds like a good hunt, whereabouts you hunting on Table Rock? Been killing a few here and there but seems like most are still up north. Need some freezing temps and snow up north!
duckydoty Posted December 18, 2011 Author Posted December 18, 2011 Ive been hunting between Kimberling City and the dam. I've hunted every day and only had 4 or 5 really good days on the Rock so far. You are right about the birds. Most of the are still up north of us, but our time will come. Marty, Had golden eye tenders in a stir fry last night with a peanut sauce and pod Thai noodles ... ness Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 Wow -- that looks like fun. Great that you can get your ladies in on it. My daughter has a big soft heart for animals, and went through a lot of years grumbling about me hunting. She even dabbled in being vegan for a while. She'd never hunt with me growing up, but she will fish with the ol' man if there's nothing else going on. Funniest thing -- she heads off to college and falls in with a couple guys, comes home and tells me she's been going turkey hunting! I bagged a couple pheasant a few weeks ago, and she was even willing to give it a try. Good to have may baby girl back on track! John
