Geoff Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 I decided yesterday that I am good at fly fishing in streams, creeks and rivers, but when it comes to bass fishing in lakes I am awful at it. I was at a lake yesterday and saw many fish right in the shallows staring at something close to the bank. they were interested in eating, but didnt really look at much i put in front of them. whats a good fly for convincing them or when they see it they just have to eat it to remove it from sight? these were big fish in the shallows. 16-18" or more "When you do things right, people wont be sure you've done anything at all."
fishinwrench Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 Here's one I'm anxious to drag through a bed
Wayne SW/MO Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 If they were thinking about procreation they probably weren't hungry, but they will defend. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Addicted to Creeks Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 I would love to buy most of these flies Fish always lose by being "got in and dressed." It is best to weigh them while they are in the water. The only really large one I ever caught got away with my leader when I first struck him. He weighed ten pounds. —Charles Dudley Warner
Members STL Matt Posted May 1, 2012 Members Posted May 1, 2012 Just spent the weekend at a friend's wedding out by Hermann in a cabin with a big farm pond full of big largemouth. The only rod I had on me was a 4-weight fly rod, so I tied on my one and only sneaky pete and went out in a boat to see what happened. After breaking the skinnier part of my leader (leftover from last trout outing) a few times trying to set the hook, I finally started landing some big suckers. I found the 4-weight plenty strong to set the hook, and plenty strong to fight some 16-18 inchers, but really bad for how sore and tired I got from casting with it. In this particular pond it didn't seem to matter if you let it sit or moved it, either way if you got it anywhere close to the deeper bank you'd get a hit on just about every cast, and some of those fish would let you miss 'em two or three times before they wised up. Man, what a fun time. I love Sneaky Pete. But I'll definitely bring a heavier rod next time I go...
stlfisher Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 Casting large flies on a light rod can be tiresome for sure. I used to fish for bass with a 5 weight and the rod was fine, but I am super happy with the 7 weight
Gavin Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 Lots of folks tend to push their cast when trying to cast a big bug...you cant push spagetti and make it move forward..you have to pull through the stroke to your stop. A 7wt-8wt helps too.
Wayne SW/MO Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 That and open up the loop some. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
