Feathers and Fins Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Decided to go out to the rodent on a hunch. all week the birds have been loaded in the morning but just before sunrise the depart. So I figured lets give a couple hours in the evening a watch. Sure enough the dang things are comming in at night. I didnt want to blow the Puddler game so i was set up in a small cove i can look over the main lake but I knew Goldeneye love.. 3GE downed in 2 hours of hunting. The funnest part though was watching a grebe beat up on my decoys, I swear he would swim up peck on it and back off fast then do it again.. I even stood up to spook him and all he did was go right back to the decoy and do it again.. I was laughing one of those belly laughs so hard i almost wet myself.. Pics arnt the best quality my cell camera sucks. but here they are. And here is the insane grebe squad. Fun way to kick off the New Year. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
duckydoty Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Looks like you had a good time. I've got a cove I hunted over by the dam on Table Rock that 53 of them greebs came into all at the same time. Biggest buch of greebs I've ever seen together. Looking forward to a good couple of days up at Four Rivers starting in the morning. A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! jdmidwest Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Slingshots and marbles are good for grebes, as well as beaver and coots. I keep one in the blind to fend off annoying peckers like that. Works good to pick on your duck hunting buddy when he is out screwing with the dekes. An RC boat does good too, but my prop always gets tangled in the moss. Feathers and Fins Posted January 2, 2012 Author Posted January 2, 2012 LOL...I actually enjoy watching grebes. But slingshots are a fun Idea for people who like messing with decoys hmmmmm... RC Boat wouldnt be a good idea I run long lines on all my decoys and that could be a major issue but still fun idea. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
BilletHead Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Pretty neat to see the grebes I think. You guys that hunt the big waters have a large diversity of critters to see. Water in the ponds had warmed up enough that turtles were pecking and bumping my decoys the last couple of days. Would like to trade turtles for grebes? 24 here this morning and 19 tonight. Supposed to be 61 next Thursday. Crazy weather. Last year it was froze up tight at this time and all I could get was canadas, no ducks but I think it is because I am not savvy about field hunting ducks. I have now invested in a couple dozen full bodied mallards but I suppose I will not get to use them this year being so warm. When it is froze up big time there was a great flight of canadas morning and evening off of Stockton lake. Thew fly right over the trees passing over the house. One evening I pass shot from the porch, got feathers. Feathers have you gotten your ringneck drake for mounting yet? Pat and I seen a couple of beautiful drakes on a pond yesterday. I sent them your way. Bird Watcher if you are out there we seen about 50 canadas and three lonely snows on Mike's pond next to his house.
