bluebasser86 Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 Is there a certain time of year that is better than others for catching browns on jerkbaits? I know that higher generation times tend to be better but is it better in the winters when there is a shad kill or anytime there is a heavier current? Any better colors/brands of baits? I have a lot of lucky craft 78 pointers and planning on getting some size 8 and 10 Xraps in their trout colors because most of my pointers are baitfish colors. I'm guessing that the bigger browns probably gravitate more towards the larger baits and the small baits attract more stocker 'bows. Thanks in advance for any help.
gotmuddy Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 when is the best to jerkbait for browns? Generally whenever you go. I ALWAYS have one tied on, ALWAYS. lately a cd-7 black/silver has been doing great. My problem is not knowing where to find big browns. I havent caught a keeper(24") brown yet, so far the biggest I have caught is 18" or so. I like throwing jerkbaits all the time. everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.
BFTMASTER Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 I think it is best when the current is moving fast enough that the fish have to react quick, otherwise they get a really good look at it and deny. I do well in eddys where the current swings my bait over a gravel or sand bar. Sometimes I can just barely reel my lure in and let the current work it for me. They hit it hard like that. (Mostly chunkier than average rainbows though)
Ham Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 I do think there are times that the browns move upstream to spawn some of the lower river areas get kind of thin in the big brown department. I've heard that you kind find MORE big browns loosely pooled in certain areas as they move to spawn, but haven't seen that myself. Come fish the White whenever you can stand the temps. Bring jerk baits from 2 1/2 to 7 inches long in a variety of colors and throw them until the fish tell you what they want. They eat all day everyday but NOT some days are better than others and some hours are golden. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
