BackCastingGolfer Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 With the new bass rods that are getting so popular now, starting with Sage, then Ross, now BPS has one too, I was curious to see if anyone had actually heard of someone competing(and if they did how did they do) in bass tourneys. I don't fly fish for bass much, but if I were to start doing it more and got good at it...it would be tempting to pair up with some friends of mine and go in on a tourney on the fly. Thoughts?
fishinwrench Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 If it ever takes off I'd do it. I would prefer a draw type format and paper score though, instead of a weigh-in. (Scoring in inches rather than pounds).
BackCastingGolfer Posted January 22, 2012 Author Posted January 22, 2012 Either way I'd be for it, I would just have to find a partner with a boat...
fishinwrench Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Either way I'd be for it, I would just have to find a partner with a boat... Yeah, a FLYFISH friendly boat. Most bassboats have too many "attachments" (seats, cleats, ect.) and make flyfishing out of them a nightmare. I have a 16' Lowe Olympic jon specifically rigged for flyfishing and out of all the boats I've had it is by far my favorite, I've had more FUN in it within a years time than all the other boats combined.
Justin Spencer Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 The flatsboats that are used in Florida are perfect for fly fishing. Center console with a big front deck and a poling platform and two can flyfish from it easily. I have a trolling motor on the front of mine which gets in the way some, but allows me to fish by myself with a minimum of interference. I know they have trolling motors that can attach to your trim tabs if you have them, and could probably be remotely controlled. fishinwrench Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 One of my customers has a 17' Mako flats skiff that I've been trying to finaggle him out of for several years, he never uses it and that just drives me crazy..... I NEED that boat!
Wayne SW/MO Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 I started fly fishing as a youngster bass bugging farm ponds. I've never had more fun with a flyrod. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
drew03cmc Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 I know for a fact that BASS does not allow fly rods in their tournaments. Their rules specify spin or casting tackle, no longer than 8'. Andy
exiledguide Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 They had a fly fishing tournament way back in the early days of BASS, on Dale Hollow [i think] in the winter won by Billy Westmorland and I'm not sure it was an offical tourney staged when Ray Scott was trying to get members. If I remember it was a total farce Billy won using a hair jig on his home lake and I think there were very few fish caught. It was kind of swept away, he couldn't sell advertising to the fly fishing industry. It may come as a suprise to you the changes through the years to yhe rules, at one time unless I'm wrong you were limited to a small amount of tackle you could fish with, your tackle box could only weigh a certain number of pounds , off course Bass boats back then were were not big enough to hold much tackle. They actually looked like a cross between a claw foot bath tub and a john boat. Seems like Terry and Skeeter were the big names back then. I think back then bass fishing was a lot more fun because you were a fisherman before you became a bass fisherman or lady. It sure was a lot cheaper.before lure manufactures became corperations with an outdoors division.
Jason R. Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 It seems implausible to me for a fly fisherman to really compete in a bass tourney. A fly fishing only tourney would be a lot of fun though. http://flyinthesouth.com/
