Troutnut69 Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Spent three days this past weekend on the White and NFOW rivers. The plan was to float and throw big streamers for browns , unfortunately we only got good floating water the first day on the White and then they shut it down pretty much. On Sunday we hopped over to the NFOW and tried our luck there. Again we did nothing but throw streamers and came up with two browns and three or four bows. While we didn't land any big ones we had some great chases and eats that we just couldn't seal the deal on. Fish were caught , but not the size we were hoping for on this trip.Maybe next time! Of course we had a great time anyway , anytime you float around 40 miles of river in three days...catch a few fish...drink a few beers and hang out with some great guys you can't hardly go wrong. Full TR on my blog......Jeff http://highplainsflyfisher.blogspot.com/

Like you said, good friends and good times on the river, fish are just a bonus.
Gavin Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Nice report....I'm sure that you cleaned your boots, boats & waders before you came back from Didy infested Arkansas ;>)!
Justin Spencer Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 I'm sure that you cleaned your boots, boats & waders before you came back from Didy infested Arkansas ;>)! ipb.global.registerReputation( 'rep_post_219397', { domLikeStripId: 'like_post_219397', app: 'forums', type: 'pid', typeid: '219397' }, parseInt('') ); I know Gavin is just joking around here and at the risk of opening a can of worms, people have been going between the White and NFOW and Eleven point for years and years, and so far we have been fortunate for it not to spread. Some day we may get infected, but I really think it would have happened by now if it were going to. It just isn't possible to get everything cleaned up overnight dried out etc. when you go from the White one day to an uninfected stream the next. It might be boots, waders, an anchor line, a gouge in the bottom of a boat, backing, a streamer used the day before, etc. Because of our close proximity here on the NFOW I'm sure there have been many many times that someone has fished the White, gotten blown out by generation and moved up here to fish in the afternoon, no way to prevent cross contamination short of saying if you fish in Arkansas you must wait 2 weeks to fish in Missouri. That's not practical and won't ever happen so I for one won't worry about it. Lots more issues than just felt soles, but I guess maybe banning them could make a difference. Jeff, enjoyed the blog, it was good seeing you, wish I could have joined in. Water has come up and looks so much better for streamers than the low clear stuff you had, ain't that how it always works. sean c Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Good stuff Jeff. They have shut the water off on our last two trips to the White(I thought I was the only one with that type of luck). The NFOW did save the day for us on the last trip. The dam to Cotter had to be a death march on no generation in a drifter.
Justin Spencer Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 What? We get a 2:30 am booty call in the middle of the night so you can come over and take advantage of us, is that all we are to you the old standby when you leave empty handed at closing time. I feel violated. "The problem with a politician’s quote on Facebook is you don’t know whether or not they really said it." –Abraham Lincoln Tales of an Ozark Campground Proprietor Dead Drift Fly Shop
Jason R. Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Awesome blog man- I went on a very similar trip with very similar results recently- great times, not a ton of fish in the boat but the chases were fun. Our best fly was a big green and black "boogy-man" as I remember- that norfork float is cool but real short with alot of water. On a side note we tried the same thing on the Little Red and it was very disappointing. The Dam to the first big island was cool but after that down to swinging bridge it is not worth it- Im sure if we had caught more fish I would have a different attitude but oh well. http://flyinthesouth.com/
Troutnut69 Posted January 27, 2012 Author Posted January 27, 2012 Thanks for all the comments guys. Too bad it didn't work out where you could join us Justin , would have enjoyed your company and we obviously needed someone to show us how it's done!! Maybe next time.... Gavin - while I know you made those comments kind of tongue-in-cheek , I suppose that's just a classic example of why the felt sole laws can only do so much. I will say that I don't use felt any longer and I did dry out my boots and waders overnight (honestly more of a personal comfort thing than me being a good steward though I have to admit). I'd be lying if I said that the thought even crossed my mind as we dropped the boat into the NFOW River and waded in beside it. Not sure what we could have done differently except maybe stopping at a carwash on the way or simply not making the trip across the state-line. Something to think about I guess.....

I'm guilty. I can't remember how long ago, but it's long. Pete
