Justin Spencer Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Just saw KY3 that there is a bill in the Mo. Senate right now that gives citizens the right to kill any mountain lion they see, they would however have to report it immediately and turn it over to agents within 24 hours. Give me a break! drew03cmc Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Seriously? Those animals were here long before any white immigrants were. This is a terrible thing for any conservation minded individual or entity. I hope this gets shot down, pardon the pun. Andy
skeeter Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Any information on which Legislator introduced that bill ? If they can be identified, concerned MO citizens should flood his email with appropriate comments.

I agree I just saw it on the news without specifics, might be something they are trying to slip by without anyone noticing. Justin Spencer Posted February 3, 2012 Author Posted February 3, 2012 Here are some specifics. JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — A state senator has introduced legislation clarifying that anyone in Missouri may kill a mountain lion. Republican Sen. Bill Stouffer, of Napton, offered the proposal Thursday. His bill would require anyone who kills a mountain lion to report immediately to a state conservation agent and surrender the body within 24 hours. Missouri statutes are currently silent on the killing of mountain lions. The Department of Conservation says Missouri has had 27 confirmed mountain lion sightings since 1994, mostly in southern sections near the Arkansas border. In January, a man in Reynolds County caught a live male mountain lion in a large cage trap. Conservation agents collected DNA samples and released the cat into the wild. ___ Mountain lion bill is SB738 Online: http://moga.mo.gov "The problem with a politician’s quote on Facebook is you don’t know whether or not they really said it." –Abraham Lincoln Tales of an Ozark Campground Proprietor Dead Drift Fly Shop

drew03cmc Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Email sent. Eric, you are right. The fact that it is a Republican doesn't shock me either. It was expected. Let the fear take over and go from there seems to be their mantra, however, if they were educated on these animals, they would learn that these cats are worthy of the awe that they inspire. They are not a threat to humans unless confronted, which is so rare in the wild, it would likely never happen. I wish they did some research before wanting to fearmonger something through the legislature. Andy
Daryk Campbell Sr Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 What is wrong with the law that states you can kill any animal if it is a direct threat (paraphrasing)? That is all that we need. There is really no reason I can see to kill an animal that has no nutritional value, nor usefull value by being dead. (pardon the wording, I am trying to say I understand pelt trapping, the pelts are able to be used for more than bragging rights.) I really don't believe we need new laws, lets try enforcing the ones we currently have. I really don't see where political party has much to do with this. ( I don't claim any party myself ) Money is just ink and paper, worthless until it switches hands, and worthless again until the next transaction. (me) I am the master of my unspoken words, and the slave to those that should have remained unsaid. (unknown)
eric1978 Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 What is wrong with the law that states you can kill any animal if it is a direct threat (paraphrasing)? Because the hillbillies will use that as an excuse to shoot anything that moves. And who's gonna prove otherwise when they do?
stlfisher Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 It just had to go political....ugh I sent my email too.
