jdmidwest Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 I have tried my luck at trapping with Cable Restraints this year. I made my own restraints from supplies at local hardware stores. It has been a fun project, a lesson on trial and error. I have been running about a dozen sets on the farm for the last few weeks. I have been using a system of game cameras to scout the trails. So far, 2 catches and several knocked down. But the catches were Catch and Release, one must have caught before the ears and pulled out, the other had a failure of the 350 lb breakaway. Both left coyote hair behind. Does anyone else use Cable Restraints on here? "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
Flatbottom Boy Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 I have experience running what we called snares in Alaska, but I'm pretty sure they are the same thing you guys refer to as cable restraints. I am not familiar with the regulation for trapping here, so if your question falls into that realm I wont be any help.
eric1978 Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 I like to put out a piece of meat and surround it with about a thousand thumbtacks. When I see the bait is gone and I find little drops of blood all around it makes me chuckle to imagine the furry cactus feet limping around the woods. Good times!
jdmidwest Posted February 11, 2012 Author Posted February 11, 2012 MO only allows snares in under water sets for beaver and otter. The cable restraints use a relaxing lock that does not choke in case a dog comes by. I have been targeting the coyotes and foxes that are hanging around our rabbit pen. I am going to try that tack thing Eric, sounds like fun. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
Daryk Campbell Sr Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 Come on guys, its things like that, that get the PETA types in an uproar. That is "Cruel and Unusual" in my book. Remember what you were taught in ethics in Hunters Ed. Quick Clean Kill. The thumbtacks can be stepped on by many animals and shed by the coyotes that originally picked them up, and then your own pets may step on them. Not trying to ruin anyone's day, but somethings (if practiced) should not be public. Money is just ink and paper, worthless until it switches hands, and worthless again until the next transaction. Daryk Campbell Sr Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 ..... Understood. Sorry, items written in text lack the emotion that is "read" while the same items are spoken. eric1978 Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 ..... Understood. Sorry, items written in text lack the emotion that is "read" while the same items are spoken. No problem. I just like to give JD trouble about his utter lack of compassion for animals. Given that I posted my spoof torture right below his actual torture, I can understand the confusion.
jdmidwest Posted February 15, 2012 Author Posted February 15, 2012 Eric is a sadist and loves to torture for no reason, I just kill outright. Cable restraints are the humane way to trap, it does no harm to the animal. It essentially leashes it until the trapper returns to dispatch it or sell it live to someone that lets his dogs chase it. I use them for cheap predator control. The predators are killing my innocent little bunnies that we raise for profit. What is this thing called PETA anyway? Daryk Campbell Sr Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 JD, I have no problems with trapping, I am interested in it myself. Protecting your animals and family/household is your right. I just was turned off by the idea of a thousand tacks in the middle of the forest which, in no logical way could be picked up, and other animals would suffer pain that would possibly lead to infection and a slow painful death for no benefit to anyone. I am a small game hunter, I hunt deer and such, no luck yet. You gotta stand for something or you will fall for anything. You guys now know my stance. :-) Money is just ink and paper, worthless until it switches hands, and worthless again until the next transaction.
